|

My transmission is difficult to shift into gears. I have narrowed it down to the cable. In the diagram below, bottom left box, you see what looks like a cross
in the cable housing tube and various internal parts. What is the purpose of this piece? Is this causing the shifting problem or would it just be a lack of lubrication throughout the cable? Any tips on repair are appreciated.

I guess you'll find out after you clean and lube the cable properly, hit the local motorcycle shop for tools and tips on cable maintenance. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Crushie,
If you look in the Bentley on page 43 ' auto trans section ' Fig 13-1
you will see the difference between 1972-1973 compared to 1974-1979
The Detent plunger assembly was deleted in 74 and moved to the shift
knob.
Your early model needed the plunger to be sure the gear selection had
latching and un-latching feel to it.
and does not have anything to do with the shifting mechanism in the 'trans. _________________ V.W.owner since 1967 |

I'd still clean and lube the cable regardless, not an easy item to find so give it some love to make it last and who knows? it may help the situation too. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Funny thing on the model years, my 74 has the detent plunger as you see in the picture. All the rubber seals are gone and no doubt that gravel and dirt played a part in the stiffness of the shifting. Cleaned it all up and it moves much easier now.
Any ideas on how to lube the cable?
Worlds longest shift rod and cable.
Where can I hunt down rubber bellows that I can use to replace all the damaged ones?

Blow the cable housing out with compressed air.Hang it up and pour
some oil in it or use lithium grease in the spray can.
Parts needed:
Rubber bellows #22 in the Bentley same as manual shift rod.
Rubber bellows # 6 you may be able to use a heater cable bellows
or get creative at a good auto parts store.
Good work so far Crushie _________________ V.W.owner since 1967 |
