PostPosted: Thu Mar 04, 2010 8:57 pm    Post subject: Need help on wheel sizes.... Reply with quote

I have a 1960 spatz body on a 1974 beetle chassis with the 4 bolt pattern. My problem is that I need to find out what other type of car wheel will interchange with it. I am looking to find 10 in rear rims and not having much luck.
I know I can buy adapters for chevy or ford....at least I think I can..right? Any help I can get from anyone would be greatly appreciated. What is the actual inside dimension of a stock 4 lug wheel and the bolt pattern size?
Thanks all......................................nybugguy

4 lug pattern is 4 X100 mm

Centerline makes a wheel for that although is is not cheap.

There are a few others. Go to a vw offroad online store and check what they have.

Cip1.com has a few. Here is an example of some.

That site you showed me only shows 4 lug 4x130mm pattern. Is that what you meant or is there both 100 & 130mm 4 lug patterns?

Clone did a typo - the VW 4-lug pattern is 130mm diameter (easy to measure yourself BTW).

You'll be somewhat limited with that wheel pattern and finding wide (new) rims. Occasionally some Sprintstars show up on the classifieds. Porsche 914 shared the same bolt pattern, so another option is to try to find some old racing wheels for a 914.

Otherwise, widened steel wheels, old school style 8-spokes, or Centerlines are some of the more available options. Most of the widely available new aftermarket alloy wheels (for the 4x130mm fitment) only come in up to about 5.5" wide.

With the availability of re-drilled drums & rotors, to me it doesn't make sense to use adapters (though they are available) - they add extra unsprung weight and a lot of extra bolts to keep tight. Going with the domestic Ford or Chevy bolt pattern opens you up to a huge amount of wheel options, in just about any size (or style) you could imagine.

Moore Partsin Cali has the four lug steel wheels up to 12" wide I believe. Try those and paint them black. They even have the farm implement tires you are looking for.

You could always swap those four lug drums for a pair of '67 five lug drums or just use some four to five lug adapters and I could put you in touch with my Buddy who has a pair of those massive ribbed floatation tires already mounted on ten inch wide five lug VW rims for sale. Weren't you lookin' for a set of those?

He's in Massachusetts, but we could probably arrange some sort of hand-off to get them up your way.

Maybe? Maybe not . . .
