This topic will attempt to cover the different splash pans for the various years of Buses. Any contributions welcome.

Wade also has some additional information at:
http://dropgates.com/y2y/pedalpans.html

Color for the pedal pan is grey. It's the VW grey primer color.

Early style (55-60?):
Note flat area around steering box cutout.
For 55-57 the front lip where it bolts to the nose is also flat, later Buses had those areas pressed outward a bit, see later examples below:

Earlier pans (55-57?) have this highlighted area spot welded on - note this first pan shown was identified by a member as a 65-66 pan and is just highlighted for reference

Any pics of that(?), as it is what I am looking for.

Great thread BTW. I was thinking of suggesting something like it this AM after reading another post where the subject came up yet again.

Oh? Pics would be great, I can add it.

I know I have heard people say that the very early pans (55-56?) have some parts that are spot-welded on, like they were made in multiple pieces.

Pics needed of that as well.

i have several different 55-58 buses here,i will see if i can see the inner nose panel change cut off (roughly) by comparing my inventory,i have big stack of early pedal pans but they are seriously buried, maybe someone else has some that are easy to access?

im going to guess the change is when the tailights changed in 57 as theres a bunch of little things that are new in the mid 57 buses

edit, your pics actually show the non relief pressed edge on the early pan....

great thread EB. I see evidence of splash pans on the front of my bus, is there any way to tell if they were OG ? I just ordered my Birth Ceritificate, will it be on there? Information about repops and their quality or lack thereof might be worthy of mention.

I believe they all came with one when new, and that there are no repro's being made.

Yes, all Buses had a pedal pan as far as I know.

The only repop I know of is Gerson is reproducing the Barndoor pedal pan.
The 55-up ones pop up fairly frequently, there are a number of them for sale in the Bus classifieds right now.

Did they come in various colors over the years? Were they all the same color? Were any originally in colors coordinated to the paint codes?

My best guess is that they are all the VW grey primer. Various shades of grey though since that varies over the years.

For those searching for the one year only 67 pan, I can confirm that the later pans are exactly the same pressing excepting for the MC cutout. If you want to "make" your 67 pan, I scribed these measurements directly onto another pan.

There are some small subtle differences too that I think are somewhat unknown.
Greg, Clara, and I were looking at 5 or 6 different similar year range splash pans together
one evening and we picked out 3 or 4 small different things between them all...

I have some pics of what you guys are talking about. If youd like em better i can get em, just need some time..LOL.
My bus is late july early august 57 and has the pressed bumps in the front inner valance. I was just PMing lind about this cause i dont know if the pan i have is correct or not. The pan has the flat steering box area, but has bumps in the back for push pin brake switch, and my bus would have had a screw terminal brake switch. It also has the 3 pressings on the front edge of the pan, to coincide with the bumps i have on my inner valance. Its so the bolts go in at an angle upward. Easier to get tools onto, and pushes pan up into place as you tighten it.
One last oddity. It seems that on whatever bus this pan was for, the outer most 2 rear pan slots where they mount to the body, are further rearward than the 2 in the center, mainly just the driver rear. Whereas my bus has all 4 bolts straight acrossed the back edge. Once i worked it a tad, it fit perfect with a lil bit of spring load which is nice IMO, it wont rattle. Smile

Ill be posting these in my buses thread anyways. That was my original intent. But then saw this post and i like to help add to the knowledge base so. Smile

Where does that little metal tab go into? And more importantly what is it for?

Great thread thanks. Wink
