67 Beetle. DP 1600 pretty much stock. I have eaten up fuel pumps left and right. Upon inspection it looks like the push rod the pump sits on is hammering the piss outta the foot on the pump. Car starts bucking like its starving for fuel and whalllah time to replace another. Im gonna give adding some gaskets under the pump to raise is slightly a try. Pros out there have any ideas why this would keep happening? If the gasket trick doesnt work Im gonna shove my old Bugpack electric pump back in and put a block off plate on the block over the stock pump.

which pump you using? is the pushrod correct length for your pump? was .040" pre load done on pump when built or rebuilt? it sounds like pushrod is too long and ruptures the diaphram from over travel.

Do have an alternator? If so, you may be running the push rod for the generator type pump.

This push rod is longer for the generator type pump, as the pump can sit upright. Alternator type pumps have a shorter push rod as the pump has to make way for the space the alternator takes up.

It doesn't sound like a pump problem at all. More like a push rod problem.

Bill I have tried both style pumps. Im running a generator and have used the original style and the flat top style. Brand new on both. Im gonna crack open the Bentley and measure rod length. I too believe the rod to be the culprit hence me adding more gaskets under the pump. Does anyone know off hand the lengths of both rods? Thanks for the quick responses.

Ditto on being too long....

After you get it sorted out you need to check your pump pressure...

Here's a link for ya...

Okay pulled the pump. I have the longer rod in there. I have both a short and long rod in hand. I have an ass load of spare parts. Now which length rod goes with which style pump? I had to get a flat top style pump as thats all the store had so I want to make sure I have the correct rod in there. When I say flat style I mean this one.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The rod at its highest point protrudes .50" above the bakelite stand which I believe is right within specs.
Also when I pulled the pump the recesses in the bakelite stand are filled with oil. Is this to splash lubricate the pump or do I have another issue? Just want to make sure this is right as I cant recall if it should have oil in the recesses or not.

generator pump stands straight up//////long rod (4 1/4") alternator pump leans over to miss alt/////////short rod (3 15/15") simple. Gen. application needs 13 mm. from spacer,,,alt will be around 7mm. sticking up . these measurements are taken at full lift.........these parts ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE.

From this thread:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=380442&highlight=fuel+pump+push+rod

The way you adjust fuel pressure after you have sorted out what you have and need for parts is to add gaskets until you have the pressure right....

Oil in the area is normal...goes everywhere....

make sure you greese the hell outta the cavity the push rod connects with the pump lever. i ate up a couple pumps and tried all that stuff then relized i wasn't packing enough grease in the cavity and it would wear down the pump lever and push rod really quickly.
