I am going through some stuff today trying to decide what to keep and what to trash and I found a few things I need help identifying:
1. A set of DP heads. Under the valve covers it has these identifiers:
041 101 375 2
2BR
81
On 1 exhaust port on each head (near a stud) it is stamped SCS1320.
The inside diameter of the combustion area is 98mm and they have
lash caps.
2. What appears to be a type 3 block (has the oil filler that is held in with
two bolts). It has case savers and the inside diameter is 95.45mm.
Question: The case halves have two different numbers down in the
sump area (53 211 101 122D & 26 311 101 101K). I assume that
means this is a compilation of two separate halves that were not
matched at the factory? That means "no good"?
3. A H case short block. Paperweight?
Got a few more items but I think pictures might be needed (like weird rockers) so this will be updated.
Thank you. |

I'll start-
1. Your heads- "SCS..." may stand for Small Car Specialties, a very popular and big accessory store for VWs in the 1980's located in SoCal. The # might be for their catalog item# for a stock hed that was "massaged" in their shop. |

Interesting regarding the heads. I did a search on Small Car Specialties and I saw a post that has the same style of lettering as mine do...so I assume that they are from them.
Now two follow-up questions:
1. If the diameter of the combustion chamber is 98mm then what size pistons would they fit?
2. What are they worth?
How about the case questions? |

1. Per GeneBerg's website
http://www.geneberg.com/cat.php?name=85.5mm-90.5mm%20Piston%20&%20Cylinder%20Sets&cPath=2668
heads bored to 98mm take 90.5 piston/cylinder sets.
2. I have no experience with that, but would depend on the usual diagnosis for VW heads-
if any exhaust studs are broken
if somebody goofed with the porting and broke through the intake port
if there are cracks between either valve seat and the sparkplug hole
if there are cracks between both valve seats
if the valve guides are still within spec
if cooling fins are broken off
etc.
3. Generally the "H" case is regarded as the least desirable for any VW engine due to alloy softness compared to later ones. If it's not already been done, the least you'd need to invest to build a stock engine would be case savers, a main bearing saddle align-bore and maybe also face the cylinder "ledges" in each of the 4 cylinder openings so that a new set of cylinders sits nicely on a fresh, parallel surface. That's easily ~$150 of labor. |
