Cool plate Captain!
So I'm assuming you have not upgraded to electronic ignition on this good looking engine?
I imagine it has been done, but has anyone truly tested an EMP on a breaker point ignition VW? |

I just bought a 73 Thing about 3 weeks ago (in great shape, painted red, bone stock except for the color). I was driving it for the first time and I was only about a mile from my house when a rough looking dude pulls up next to me on a big, loud Harley. The guy looks like a Bandito (Mexican biker gang), with a long beard, leather vest, and a bandana for a helmet... he looks over at me, checks out the Thing, and asks "what year is it?" I yell back "73!" He gives the Thing one more serious look from front to back and then says "NICE!" and roars off ahead of me. That was the first of many stares and positive comments I've received over the past couple of weeks. I've been referring to my Thing as a "happy car" because everyone seems to smile when they look at it. |

Nope. Points. But thanks for the kind words. BTW, it's the electronic ignition that is susceptible to EMP. Points are EMP proof. |

GUy at work asked me the other day, "did you get in a race on the way to work?" I said "no, why"
"somebody blew your doors off!"
I had taken them off at home, of course. Along with the top and windows. |

I stopped for gas one day and some guy asked " What is that? " I replied "its a thing"...... The guy then asks " what are you going to do with it?".... I laughed and didnt have an answer for him.
I got pulled by a state trooper one day. He asked for my licenses and registration. I know I wasnt speeding and asked him why he pulled me over. He explained to me he had a report of a stolen vehicle that matched the description of my vw. I laughed, because I have not seen but a hand full of things in my area. Let alone one with an avacado green paint job..... |

Yah, but what kind of VW Thing is it? (After I told them it was a Thing)
You want to sell it?
It doesn't have windows?
That some kind of kit car?
Don't get into an accident. You'll be dead in that Thing!
I saw one of those in the Indiana Jones movie.
They used those in WWII, you know. |

Yesterday I drove to my local Albrecht discount store. Upon wheeling my cart out to my parked Thing (parked far out in the lot), I notice a car pulling towards me.
"Is this your car?" a middle-aged woman asks from the driver's window of her Marquis.
Me: "Yes, do you like it?"
Her: "Well, we want to know what it is. We know it's a Volkswagen, but..."
Her lady friend: "Yeah, what year is that thing?"
Me: "Yeah, that's it. Its a Thing. A 1973."
Them: "We love it!"
And with that they drove away.
I love driving my Thing!

I just bought my first Thing last week and I flat towed it up to Farm and Fleet to get the tires changed/repaired. When I came back out a guy walks up to me and says:
Him - "What are you doing with the Jeep?"
Me - "It's not a Jeep, It's a Volkswagen."
Him - "Are they still making them?"
Me - "No, only in '73 and '74"
Him - "It looks just like the ones they used in that show M*A*S*H"
Me -"ok"
Him - "There's one of these up route 14, looks just like it only it's a truck"
It was 11:00 am on a weekday and I could smell the beer on him! |

Off the top of my head, I recall several "I haven't seen that car in years" comments, as well as a "Is it for sale?" comment... before I even bought it (borrowed it many times from my friend beforehand. Makes me thankful I did buy it in the very end).
Kinda got the hint that this car will grab attention, but really, how can it NOT? You literally don't see VWs out here in Texas too often, let alone the Things. _________________ 73 VW Thing "Django" |
