When I was at the Credit Union showing them what their Signature Loan bought this teenage girl came in and asked me if it was OK to take a couple pictures to show her dad. I said "Sure"

Last week was a new one for me:
At a stop light a young guy whipped out his cell phone and snapped a picture (or 3) of me and my car at the stop light. No comment, no thumbs up, just cell pictures. I suppose I'm now some social media comment somewhere.

That's funny, I too fell victim to a "photo drive-by" last week. No comments or gestures either, just pictures. I was first in line at a red light, and it was a passenger in a car from the cross traffic. |
I get that a lot here in Silicon Valley - no comments or anything, just a camera flash. _________________ VW-181 shirts and stickers.

Without exception I hear some sort of comment or remark every single time I take the car out. I've been stopped by people who want to take a picture, honked at and had plenty of waves. However, the one comment I hear the most...
"I haven't seen one of those in about 30 years!"
My favorite is when some poseur driving a flashy, mid-life crisis car pulls up next to me at a light and eyeballs my ride. I just look back and think "Yes, my car IS a lot cooler than whatever your driving isn't it?"
The guy who sold me the car said just before I drove off, "I hope you like attention". Yeah, not really the vehicle you want to be driving around in if you're in the Federal Witness Protection Program. _________________

Same here. I now know to expect to get some kind of comment or reaction. It's getting to the point where I am insulted if I don't hear anything. |

I have 3 Things in my garage. When the door is up people drive by and slow down or stop to look. Most of them smile then drive on. |

I was coming back from the upholstery guy who had just put new clear vinyl in the side curtains. I turn the corner pulled up to a stop-light next to me a guy in a 68 blue and white vette with no top looked over at me and rocked his head and immediately gave a big thumbs up. Light changed I drove up a block turned right and on the other side of the road was a guy and girl in a original paint blue 68 double cab... They both smiled, were laughing and waving and shouting stuff. During the "driver season" when those two vehicle people both classic, both original ( not resto or trailer queen) go nuts just seeing you. You know what you have.... But then, Herr Kubelmann is for sure, one, bad-ass Thing. My buddy and I were gassing up after an off-road trek and two guys came up to say, "Hey, my uncle used to have a car just like this." So I lifted engine lid. And the one guy replied, "well not anything like this I guess..."

Here are a few more from recent outings.
"Look at the weird car mommy"
Overheard a couple with the wife saying "I told you that's a Volkswagen."
My favorite, "I've got to get a picture of that!"
A girl at the 7-11 wanted to know what kind of car it was. She asked
"Is that really what it's called, 'the Thing'? If I walked in to a VW dealership and ask for a Thing they'll have one?" I said yes.

I just got that the other day in the parking lot at Lowes. Not even 5 minutes later I was asked by someone else, "exactly what kind of Jeep is that?" The guy was dumbfounded to find out it's a VW.

I know a guy in LA who drives his original WWII Kubelwagen all the time. Once while he was stopped for a light, a really old guy on the sidewalk looked at him and said, "I haven't seen one of those since I was shootin' at 'em!" _________________

Yes! Happens all the time. Sometimes I'll say "It's okay to be jealous." Driving a Thing makes you an enigma. People don't know where to pidgeon-hole you, and it drives them nuts.
Another recent exchange:
One guy said to me: "What do you call that?"
Me: "Volkswagen Thing."
Guy: "Know what I call it?"
Me: "What?"
Guy: "Testosterone in a can!" |

Last weekend my son and I took a road trip on the Gulf Coast Highway. He has always made fun of mom's "old car," but he learned that "hot girls" think the Thing is cool given all the waves and questions and now thinks he may want one. He is working on perfecting the "I look cool in this Thing, yeah?" look (see below).
The best and most touching thing i've heard was from an elderly gentleman who was sitting in a truck while the driver went in to pay for gas. He got out, came over, walked slowly around her and, with tears in his eyes, began to tell me how he drove something just like that in Germany at the end of WWII. I didn't tell him that was a Kübelwagen - I let him have his memory and I wanted to hear all about it. I don't imagine there are too many folks around these days who drove a Kübelwagen in its war years.

I have been driving my thing almost every day for about a year, and the most common thing I hear is:
"DO YOU SELL IT?"

I get the "is it for sale?" question alot, too. One time, a guy offered to trade me his '88 Suzuki Samurai for it on the spot (around 1995) and was downright offended when I turned him down! _________________ I'm All About My Fetti! |
