You guys are makin' me want a Thing bad! Well, I've been a Thing fan since they were in VW showrooms. Even in my bay I get the drive by photo shooters all the time. It surprises the masses that in this era of creature comforts, some of us still want to drive something so simplistic. Peace!

I know a guy who was about 11 years old during the war and lived in East Prussia. He recently told a story about some soldiers arriving in his town in their Kubels. They parked in the town square and went into a cafe for lunch. So he and his buddys climbed into the Kubels, released the e-brakes, shifted into first gear, then held the starter buttons down while they cruised the town square on the starter motors! After a few minutes, the soldiers would recognise the sound of their starters and come out yelling.

While in Germany, I had a US soldier try to convince me that the body of my '73 was made out of fiberglass... I assured him that the rust proved otherwise.
A kid and his dad were walking by me in the parking lot when I opened the engine lid to check the oil... the kid said "Look dad, the engine is in the trunk!", the dad said "Yeah, I've seen that done before."

When my mom caught me "driving" my thing in my bedroom many years ago, she said, "Shame, shame. You're going to go blind." That's B.S. I barely need reading glasses now, some 55 years later.

funny, i don't even own a thing (THO I WANT TO GET ONE BAD), but the other day someone comes to the store i work at (advance auto), with a really nice white thing, and i'm looking at it, and other customers were asking "does it float",
cusomer: "what the hell is that thing"
owner: "yes"
Customer: "how much you want for it?"
Owner: "too much"
All this occured with in 5 minutes, lol. To me it sounded like he had the smart ass funny answers memorized, due to being asked soo many times.

Just heard my first derogatory comment while driving Thing 2.
While stuck in rush hour traffic, a car full of teeny-boppers headed the other direction were checking out the Thing. As they pulled away one of the punks yelled out "Your car sucks!" I didn't have a chance to reply, so I just laughed it off. We all know they were just jealous, especially since they were in a beat up Mazda 323.
It all evened out later as I got a few thumbs up on the ride home.

Since bringing home the Thing last week I have gotten 8 offers for way more than I bought it, 3 comments on it being a jeep, two nazi comments, a few nice ride ones and a couple of people who know its a Thing

My Thing was on the trailer while I was replacing the tounge jack in front of an RV shop:
1) Old guy sitting next to me in his car:
Old guy: "Is that a Jeepster replica"
Me: "No, It's a VW Thing
Old guy: confused look
Me: "It's like an old beetle with a different body"
Old guy: Continued confused look
2) Young guy walking past, eyeballing car:
Young guy: "What kind of chassis is that?
Me: "It's a VW Thing, mostly stock with a cage"
Young guy: confused look
Me: "It's like an old beetle with a different body"
Young guy: "But how did you install the cage without changing the chassis"
Me: "It's bolted and welded to the pan"
Young guy: confused look..Yah, I know all about Volkswagens, What size engine?
Me: "1776"
Young guy: confused look "does it go good"
Me: "Yup, goes alright"..Proceeded to fix trailer.
3) While pulling out of parking lot, a young couple in an immaculantly clean Jeep about broke thier necks turning to see me drive off.

I love this quote from your ad, "unfortunately, VW sickness forces sale....Buying a 57 VW Single Cab".
That is the truth, no doubt. I want a double cab but, the single cabs are too cool as well. I have a big gas guzzling Chevy Z71 (motorized wheel barrel/ farm truck) that needs to be replaced.

At car shows our "toy"attracts more attention than cars costing 4x as much. Lots of pictures.Every little kid has to come and look at it. One kid who was about 10 started telling his dad, "that's a kubelwagen...and gave him quite a history of the car. I was impressed. I like to stand back and just be one of the crowd. I enjoy watching people trying to figure out what it is.
When I drive through the local college area kids literally stop and stare with their mouths open.
It really is amazing  |

Some lookers but no offers yet. I think I had it priced a bit high for the market currently. The 57 SCab is not my first choice, but, since it is a 10 out of 10 insofar as the resto, I cannot pass it up. Have always wanted a DC as well but the SC suits my needs perfect, plus it has a factory aluminum drawer in the treasure chest that I have not seen before. I will post up some pics once the deal is done in early August. I have lowered the Thing to 7K which is less than I am in it with purchase price and the new hardtop, wheels, tires, shocks, TS mats, and extra motor....I think it is really a bargain. Wish me luck and I will still frequent this forum as another 181 will not be far behind. My son does'nt know that I am selling his favorite car!
