I've been surprised by the number of people who seem convinced that Things or Bugs float in general. Even my boss who has owned a Bug thought they floated. I'm guessing part of it comes from the fact that they are so light. As I recall there was a Mythbusters episode where they tried to float a newer bug but were unable to for any length of time even after they modified it. Admittedly the new Bugs aren't designed much like the older ones.
So like everything else, sure it floats but for how long.
Found these videos on YouTube.

re: the floating.
I just watched a (rather stupid) war movie called Castle Keep from about 1969 that was supposed to take place in the Ardennes during WW2. One guy fell in love with a VW beetle at this castle and his buddies rolled it into the moat for fun. Wellll...it didn't sink, it floated, the guy jumped in , started the car and drove it out of the moat! Maybe that's another reason why people think VWs all float. Gee, I guess we're all urban legends! |

From previously driving a Jeep, there was that wave shared amongst Jeep drivers. Now, when I go past a Jeep in the Thing, they don't know wether to wave or not. You can see the arm come up, then freeze, as they look in wonderment at the Thing. Before they can figure it out, I am gone.
I love it! _________________ Old City Oil Drippers Northeast |

"If Ted Kennedy was driving a Volkswagen, he'd be President now!"
I suppose that joke worked better when he was alive... but you get the point. I'm sure the fact that the Beetle floated (at least a little) contrubuted to this urban legend. _________________ Buck

I got my first comment yesterday...."Nice Thing. You don't see those around these days" .............OK That works for me. At least it wasn't a nazi comment! |

Fun181 was right on the mark when he said you'll get 100 positive comments for every negative one.
Personally I have never received a negative comment. Positive comments range from a nod of acknowledgement from another ACVW driver to offers to buy my Thing. The most negative thing I've received is a look of disappointment when I say that my Thing's not for sale.
The heightened sense of automotive asceticism common to Thing owners, and our courage to express it with our cars, makes comments from other drivers more likely. Negative comments, when they (rarely) occur, are of course merely expressions of jealousy. So, when you roll, roll proud! |

Had a new one to Me this weekend,
Was out in the 73 cruzin, a fella stoped by me at a red light hollered out "is it for sale"?
I should have said yes, at the right price..... but I responded
I just got it! and left it at that.
(one of those less than 5 second conversations)
First time for that comment, was an older gentleman too, looked in his
late 60's early 70's...
Once a fan always a fan I guess
Who am I kidin', I couldn't sell my THING!?! _________________ ****************************************

Ive had quite a few negative comments, ranging from 'what the F is that?', to 'Why don't you get a normal car?'
Even had a kid shout 'your car is $hit'.
If i wanted a 'normal' car, id go and buy a plastic thing that they sell nowadays and look like everyone else in the country.
But i'll echo the other guy's comment, about having 100 positive remarks for every negative.
I often get 'that is sick' from the local kids, which i dont mind at all, even though they'll probably go and inherit their mum's Fiesta and slap a bodykit on it! |

I had a similar comment 4 month ago. ''They should be ashamed to drive that crap'' Well who cares, most of the people who say that kind of stuff are pretty ignorant. |

got another ridiculous conversation going last weekend.
Papa John's driver in oddly enough another Lumina APV.
Papa John - "What year is that"
Me - "2004"
Papa John - "No really"
Me - "'74"
Papa - "What is it"
Me - "A thing"
Papa - his facial expression basically said "Urm Herpderp durrrp"
Me - "It's a Volkswagen 'Thing'"
Papa - as i'm trying to start it with little success "Wow it's in great shape"
Me - "No it's not" _________________ 66 fastback |

I thought that might be some sort of urban slang, so I did a search. This is what I found:

While at the Wawa (local convenience store) today there were a few cops there and one was betting the others that they couldn't identify my car. Sure enough, none of the other cops knew what it was. They asked me to confirm that it really is called a "Thing". _________________ Old City Oil Drippers Northeast |

I get a lot of peace signs when I drive and little kids seem to love it. In my neighborhood they will run down the sidewalk to chase it.... Yelling and screaming _________________ 1987 Vanagon GL |
