Now seam rust....theres something to whine about.

Yep, I've been actively looking for a replacement for mine (far worse than either of these by a factor of 5) and passed over both as far too rusty to deal with - for that price. My feeling is neither one is worth over $10K - to me.

I have an 87 with some seam rust. If I have the body work done and paint it can I get that price?

OK, last one. This is my first time browsing the general classifieds.
I just usually put in my zip code.

Quite possibly YES, somepeople require somethings really shiney in their driveways, keeping up with the Jone's you know. so if you live in a Mc Mansion and want a Westy for daytrips & roadtrips.. it has to present like your trophy wife. looks good and smooth on the outside.. but don't look under the hood. Embarassed

Criminy.

Why pick on optimisitc listings?

Unless there's clear fraud, these are ASKING prices. All is fair.
"Buyer beware" and "haggle" and all that.

methinks some here might want to take a look at lisitngs for "patina'ed" splitties for a reality check.

This thread can't be good for Samba's listing revenue.

This is the type of response that I like to hear.
I didn't know my Westy was worth that much money (asking price anyway)

Not that I'd sell it.

x2. i was thinking the same thing. i was not too happy to see this thread start yesterday as it will give a lot of uneeded bad PR to fine examples of asking prices of vans. The splitty whines is fun to read but can be real headache to legit sellers. I like the vanagon forum because it *used* to be more positive on all threads, guess those days are over. the splitty forum used to be pretty positive, but now if you ask an even remotely nooby question you get thrashed, hope that doesn't start here Rolling Eyes

sorry for my rant...

These threads are funny to me. We don't have the luxury of deciding the market value of our vehicles. The market decides. $18,000 for a very nice original paint 2wd Westy may be a bit hight but try and find one for less.

I got to watch this whole thing happen with the split window vans. They went from $600 bucks for a running driving van to $6000 for a a rusty van that might make it around the block. It was one of the things that made me get out of splitties. There are less and less nice vans. More and more non-VW people are finding out about these vans. To most hardcore VW people 20,000 for a vehicle is crazy. To the "normal" public it is just what you spend.

Some of these people push the prices but as long as people are there to pay it that is where the market will go. We can whine all we want. Might as well go along for the ride, sit back and watch with a smile. It is a lot easier that getting your panties in a bunch over it.

PM a mod, seems like they would if you asked.

I personally don't mind this thread, it lets people new to the market know what crackhead pricing is so they can avoid it.

Its a fine line..

The crackhead pricing is not entirely out of this world.
While some listings might approach silly levels on the surface.. clean Westys in California are very often over $10k and approach high teens where the Westy has been exceptionally well maintained.

Boy you guys from the LEFT coast are tough,(trophy wifes, mcmansions---ooohh Bluto the name calling hurts!!) but then you have the rust to go along with your undervalued vans. Laughing This sort of stuff happens all the time in a car/bike/you name it market where supply and demand dictates prices. Oh gee econ 101!!

Here's my gripe today.

Wow, $500. I bought a core (with heads) off CL here in Indy a few months ago. The seller did a Subaru swap. Said it ran great but had a head gasket leak. I paid him his full asking price of $25 (twenty-five)! Still had the distributor installed. Now I feel kinda guilty...

This thread can't be good for Samba's listing revenue.

I didnt start this thread to rag on sellers.
I'm all for asking top price for a nice van. But seriously...When somebody sees a nice westy sell for top price and they have one in their back yard thats been sitting for years neglected. And suddenly its worth a fortune.

I'm all for locking this thread if it turns into a bash session on good sellers.

But as our vans get older parts will become harder to find. Every once in awhile a certain part hits my wallet hard. So??? I'm the only one that doesnt like to lose an arm and leg to pay for parts for my camper?

Today i have another whine....I saw my westy drive away with new owners. It was hard to see it go.....

Whiners suck and should all get a life. More horrible are the hypocritical whiners who whine about the other whiners. Even worse are the sarcastic whiners who whine about the whiners who whine about the other whiners all the while with their tongue in their cheek.

Like my dad used to say, "you can always go down in price....you can't go up".

$18,000 is a years pay for some people....lunch money to others. You just have to know who your customers are.

Let's face it, if you make 18K/year, an 18K vehicle is not for you. Some of the comments here imply that anyone should be able to buy a nice Westy. Not so, that's not how the world works. Some of these vehicles are VERY nice and they command a high price. It's easy for us, here on The Samba, to see the difference between legit and not so legit. This scenario exists whether you are selling your grandpa's Westy, or a Rainbow Vacuum Cleaner. Plain and simple, you have the educated paying a fair price and the not so educated paying an inflated price. These vehicles are unique, as vehicles go, that's for sure, but the business of these vehicles is not unique at all. They are different, for sure, in that they are 20+ years old and people still want them, but there is plenty of merchandise that compares to this particular phenomena.
