Folks...We see alot of good deals and bad deals here. We have a thread about good deals on vans. But no gripe thread for all the overpriced crap we see.
Here's my gripe today.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=582805

I know we have some whine's here. Post em up. Its time to reveal some of them. Like group therapy.

This topic is for the general discussion and/or "whining" of all Vanagon/Eurovan cars or parts ads.

It's that simple.

OK... whine away.

At least he is paying the shipping. He is probably negotiable. I don't think those motors are that rare or I wouldn't have 20 of them in my backyard.

These post about complaining never seem to impressive. I personally think we should stick to the positive things in the world. We all know the internet is filled with overpriced crap. Buyer beware for sure. Just my $.02

I agree. The Samba classifieds are full of proud prices, to the point that i think it is hurting the sellers. I'm also irked that the classifieds get flooded
with log lists of little often insignificant parts which would be better suited to a bulk parts post.

I can't believe the discrepancy between samba parts and local craigslist parts.

Can anybody think of any 20 year old vehicle where running, driving examples range between $1000 to $80,000?

I don't quite agree with this. Those small parts have a place here, those are the parts you don't find anywhere else and you can always easily identify them here, put them in a bulk post and you probably won't be able to find them.

Back to the original post. Looking at the photo of the engine block or whatever it is in the picture has me in stitches. Bent rusty bolts and all. It has got to be someones idea of a joke. If I saw that thing on the side of the road I would keep on driving by. In contrast when I put my subie swap in I gave away my still running waterboxer.
Man I just looked at the photo again. It's just hilarious Merv

I'm all for keeping it positive too, but I had a great laugh at that one!! $500...really... Guess that makes my complete, running motor worth what, maybe $2000? Anyone want it? Shocked

ill sell u my running 2.1L motor for $350 - just fouls the plug on cylinder #1 every few hundred miles

now u wanna see a crappy deal - take a look at this.....

ordered these from a vender here on the forums - i wont mention his name but he is making a killing on parts - charging way too much for his stuff.

paid $65 for these two wonderful grease covered poly bearings - coated in the wrong grease..... lithium is not the same as molybase

so i decided to go ahead and clean one up to give it a good once over. oh yeah the guy also claims they are self lubricating bushings?? HA - he needs to do his research on bearings. a quick look on wikipedia refreshed my memory.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bushing_%28bearing%29#Bushing

well end result is the following.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

the red part on the left is the 24 year old bushing. the green one on the right is the "new and improved bushing" thats also self lubricating....(right dude keep telling urself they are self lubricating...)

wow, i dont feel ripped off or anything. after i held the new bushing and looked at it i figured out how to make them in my shop...and not be tapered..... i mean honestly - it looks a crack head tried to shape with a right angle grinder.....

I'm I fair??? Are they good???

Money is a relative thing, a rich men garbage is a poor men treasure (or something like that)

We often judge GW van price, me the first, but who is right??? you tell me.

I sell 10,000$ engine conversion, does it make me a thief?? Who are you to judge? It's a capitalist word, like it or not. At least we are SOMEWHAT FREE.

Men i do write some strange stuff after midnight.

maybe the one headed peeing spyder block is art.
it would make a great coffee table with a slab of glass over it!! I've been thinking of ways to make your house cool with auto parts. broken valves and pistons can be grouted into bathroom tile--a carerra fan in the cieling, etc....beetle roof rack inverted in the kitchen for hanging pots etc

I believe this thread is needed.
It points out reality and helps the group.
It may save a few people from getting burned.

and it's entertaining.

I would have bought it for 1K.
I sold an aircooled vanagon with two pallets of aircooled parts for $650 to a friend a few months ago. there was Two engine blocks, Dakota digital gauge, two exhausts, and a whole lot of other parts to fill up two pallets.
If i had had the one headed block i mentioned before i would have thrown it on top at no charge.

Oh, c'mon, this one is worth it just as much as the silver one William posted in the 'great deals' yesterday! Both are rust buckets but complete running vans. I'm sure someone desperate to find a Syncro Westy will buy both and fix em. Perhaps I sold my perfect rust-free '86 SW too cheap at $20K.

Absolutely absurd, if it had a TDI in it it might be worth close to that, but even then its a pretty high price.

There is an a## for every seat. Supply and demand. I see both extremes here, but most seem to fall in the "fair price" arena. Luckily we can always determine a fair price by doing some research in advance. That case looks like it was pulled off the bottom of the ocean floor. I would have to see it split to determine it's real value and it would have to be the last crank and case available. I had a member here pm me over something unrelated. Another member was mad at their vanagon and was going to scrap it for cash for clunkers I believe. I made a joke that I would like the dash vents before he crushed it. The member that PM'd me offered me vents for free including shipping. Said we all look out for each other. Once I got the vents, I made a donation to TheSamba. So in the end it all works out. I do hate when someone parts out a vanagon here peice by peice. Makes it hard on some days to scan the classifieds, but as mentioned, it could be that one rare peice you are looking for. Unrelated, I notice the one person that does this, never contributes to any discussions from what I can tell. Too busy stripping vanagons, bet he has seen it all though.

I think this subject matter could have some merit to it. Over at the IAC web site they have a heading at the top of each forum topic that reads,

parts that are known to be crap and another section says parts known to be good.

This isen't ment to necessarily slam anyone but to give a heads up on what parts people have tried and which ones were either good or bad.

Parts from EMPI and the Chinese CV joints and some of the rubber gaskets have been earmarked as being junk while parts like Lobro and Kolbenschmidt and Bosch are listed as being pretty good.

Not long ago there was a thread here on The Samba that pointed out that some of the aftermarket grommets were falling apart because they couldn't stand up to todays gas.

Personally I find threads like this to be helpful, and as long as we dont personally slam a poster who might be selling these parts but offer a critical review of the parts themselves, I think a thread like this would be OK.
