if it had a locker I'd say, yeah likely so.

the market is moving back up at an alarming pace..
the 'value' and 'availability' of comparable vehicles or just the 'adventure life' dream is screaming post Covid.
it shadows the real estate market, in that people are making loads of $$ selling out from high cost of living areas and have a big chunk of fluid cash to chase the dream of freedom and such..

so yeah this one won't last on the market for long... and sales sets the market. not sensibilities.

I know the market is moving up, but is it really moving up this much?

https://asheville.craigslist.org/cto/d/hendersonville-vw-vanagon-1986/7362927661.html

Or this?

https://asheville.craigslist.org/cto/d/asheville-1983-vw-vanagon/7360026330.html

Just curious, not complaining about what those people are asking for their vans, people can ask whatever they want and hopefully a butt finds the seat.

Just to give you some data points, check your vans value on the NADA website

I think you might be shocked

I love the part that says "About as good and ORIGINAL as it gets!"

And the ad finishes with "Won't last!"
Is that a statement on the quality of the van or referring to the rare opportunity to own such a rare and amazing piece of history?

I'd say almost every time I see an ad with something along the lines of 'won't last', 'no holds', 'first person with cash gets it', 'amazing deal' etc. to try and rush perspective buyers, the listing has been up for 6 weeks. Which pretty much debunks their thinking.

I think it's overpriced. But if it's as clean as it looks in the pictures, someone will buy it for somewhere close to asking I bet.

As soon as I read an ad for a van that lists its "name" or its radio I'm done anyway but at 22k this guy is just playing the lottery, he can't possibly believe his van is worth more than $2200 on its best day.

He wasn't smart enough to fix the FI he damn sure isn't smart enough to price it to sell either! Nobody with that kind of cash in the bank is dumb enough to write this dude a check no way.

I assume they have never used a proper Westfalia, I mean these interiors and "appliances" AKA sink and 2 burner stove, were meant to last and will probably still outlast what was produced in the last 20 years. These are not "garbage" in any sense of the term IMHO.

Low blow below the belt in favor to sell an overpriced Weekender Westfalia.

Just my $.02

Cheers!

ok that's jut a wild listing on a few fronts lets quote that whole thing here for posterity's sake

who the heck sinks $80k into something to rent out to kids to camp/party in?

Quote:
1990 Vanagon Multivan 1.8t Stephan's Swap Price: $57000
Up for sale is our EPIC fully gone through weekender. Have over 80k+ receipts from restoration, plus a van load of extra parts that comes with it (brand new canvas, headlights and so much more- too much to list). WAY too much to list all here- I will do a cliff notes version. Let's link up for a video chat if you would like a full walkthrough. I also have many more pictures I can send over, just ask.

We originally bought this to put into our outdoorsy.com rental fleet along with our Sprinter and cab over camper- but have decided against it as interest was low (it has NOT been rented, we have only used it for personal use). All the kids these days want to rent Sprinters only!

Drivetrain-

This van has had the legendary Stephans Auto Huas 1.8t Audi swap mated to an automatic transmission (extremely rare!). 26k miles on swap (have all documentation). Drives amazing, cruises on highway at 70 all day. Runs perfectly and has been inspected by German Auto in Arcata, CA. Has AC that will turn the van into an icebox.

Exterior-

Extremely good condition. Very very very little rust (as expected on a 31 Y/O vehicle). Does come with a full set of OEM window seals if you ever decide to repaint. Comes with top box, 4 bike racks, and a SUP rack. Features a Shady Boy canopy.

Interior-

Recaro seats, all interior has been re upholstered with new vinyl. ARB cooler, 2x LI batteries, propane heater with EXT built in tank. Aftermarket stereo system w/ subwoofer. Pop top canvas in excellent condition (plus includes a brand new spare). Overall 9.9/10 condition- I have never seen one this nice. Automatic locks and auto windows all work flawlessly.

Why a Weekender?-

I will admit- it was a hard sell for us originally as we really wanted a full camper. But after much research we settled on the Multivan for a few reason-

*RV grade appliances are garbage (they really are! especially when they are old, like 30-40y)

*Many full campers have major rust issues under sink

*These vans are so small its much nicer to cook outside, or use a jet boil inside.

*So much more interior room, and the bed is much bigger.

*Could easily be built out to a full camper with modern high efficiency appliances (which we contemplated but actually like this setup better)

Issues-

One thing noted on the inspection was a very small ATF leak on transmission. It does not justify a tear down (the transmission was rebuilt fully recently). Other then that everything checks out or has been dealt with- we have full service records and all receipts.

We believe in being 100% transparent on these transactions as most buyers will be coming from out of the area to purchase- we are typically on that end of things so we want to be completely up front. If you are interested further- give me a call so we can chat and do a video walkthrough.

$59,000 OBO

Looks like it could be a clean van at a reasonable price if the pictures and description are accurate. But I don't get this part:

"Air conditioning was serviced and it does work. Currently, though, it is disconnected and inoperative."

If it works, but is disconnected, doesn't that mean it doesn't work? And if it works, why is it disconnected then? Was there a problem with it? Something can't both work, and not work, at the same time.
If it's simply unplugged, or the belt was removed for some reason, wouldn't it be faster and easier to hook it back up compared to typing out that it doesn't work?

I read that simply as "AC doesn't work" and I'd expect a buyer to put a bunch of money into fixing it.

Some people imagine they get a big performance gain by disconnecting the belt.
I dont think that is good for the compressor long term though

If the belt was connected and you turn the AC on it's about a 10hp loss from the engine. There is not enough energy wasted spinning the belt on it when it is off.

Schrodinger's A/C! It both works and doesn't work, until you start the van.

I've been looking for an interior to swap into my adventure wagon, super excited when I saw this but then saw the price... bought my first westy for nearly the asking... That being said it looks to be a very nice interior.

Here you go. For a mere $8,500 you get a grungy, long-parked Westy loaded with someone's crap.

I think people apply the same thought process to pricing as they do a lottery ticket, I bet if they were paying for that ad to be there it wouldn't be worth selling but if someone buys it then they hit the jackpot.

.....or they are just not that bright!

To be fair, they're not the same dash console - the one they're selling at The Samba has a folding table on the right side which is very useful to lay maps and/or laptops, while the one from Bus Depot is a regular dash console (and shorter than the one at The Samba).

I think they're playing the supply/demand game, AFAIK, it's not possible to buy the console with the folding table anymore (cannot find it at any of the usual US or European vendors) - having say that, $325 is crazy money for one that's clearly used.

I bought one at eurocampers.com several years ago and still use it, it greatly improves the livability of the front dashboard.
