Hi Loren,
What's the tool Jason is using in that last photo you posted? It looks as if it's some telescoping arm/rod. Any ideas how it's mounted? Also, any idea on you'd know what the 'correct' distance should be? At some point, one of my fenders will need work and this question will come up.
Thanks
Mike |

DUDE!
WTF is up with that hack job on the tunnel?!?
That is causing huge stress risers in the most important structural component in the chassis.
Cuts in metal should at the very least be terminated into a round hole or curved into the next cut line. That desperately needs a doubler plate if not to be properly welded back up completely.
That should have been remedied BEFORE any paint work was performed. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

tri356 - The tool Jason is using is a telescoping arm to check that the height of each tail light is the same. I believe it attaches to the rotisserie.
TDCTDI - The holes in the frame will be properly welded up. The hole in the rear was there when I got the car and I believe Jason cut the front hole to check that the tubes inside were properly secured and that the shift rod hanger isn't worn (though it might have been there when I bought the car, I can't remember). Things that have to be done to insure that I don't have to open up the tunnel after the car is completed. A round hole would have been nice, but it wouldn't have provided enough room to get a welder in there if the tubs needed attention. The paint is just a primer to protect the bare metal and it would be harder to fully paint the inside of the tunnel after the holes are welded up. Wish we had a paint tank to dip the pan in after it's done. That would make painting the interior of the pan really easy |

The above pictures are not of my cabriolet. Unfortunately my Ghia isn't that far along yet
This is my week at Jason's shop and he sent me a few sneak peek photos. He is continuing with work on the quarter panels and engine bay. There is a lot of smoothing needed on the driver side quarter panel and the battery trays I bought from Danny Gabbard need the braces underneath and a few other details. Jason made a rough sample brace for the battery tray using an NOS battery tray as a template. The below brace is just a test run for Jason to work out the details on the construction of the brace and don't represent the finished version. Will have more photos next week, but these few images provide proof that work is continuing. Yay!

A lot more work was done to the Ghia last week. Jason smoothed out the rear quarter panels and fit the decklid, along with the rear tail lights. He also cut out the rust in the lower section of the passenger side quarter panel, made a patch section using an NOS battery tray as an example and massaged the reproduction lower fender patch panel to fit the section he cut out. After all that was done he had a little time to work on the pan. He reinforced the clutch tube and straightened out the end of the tube for the choke cable. Next month he should be able to weld in the battery trays and rear apron. Lots going on!

Jason spent last week working on the Ghia again. He spent a lot of time pushing and pulling the body to get everything to line up, so not a lot to take photos of. Once everything was lined up he welded the battery hold down parts to the battery tray and welded on the tabs for the quarter panel fiber board covers. He also had to make and install the braces under the battery trays. Seemingly simple braces, but difficult to make with the steps in them for the indents in the trays. Once that was done he was able to weld them in and prep the rear apron for welding back in place. He will finish up the rear end in the next rotation and start working on the front. Can't wait to see the front come back together.
Here is the brace he had to make for the battery tray
Adding the tab for the wiring loom
Finishing up the patch panel under the quarter panel

Yes, I will be installing the US spec bumpers with towel bars. I already have them dechromed and Jason will fit them to the car when the body is done and get them smoothed out for rechrome. Lots to do |
