I shorted the solenoid and it sounded like it spun but did not engage the starter. |
Solenoids do not sound like they "spun". The starter motor does spin. Solenoids are a magnetic pulling device, which give off a clunk when engaged.
So it sounds like you jumpered across the solenoid and spun the starter motor.
Except for the voltage to the coil with engine not running it sounds good. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Should the starter ingage and turn the engine over with the key in run position when I jump the solonide or just spin like it does?and what should the voltage be at the coil when it is not running?Does it sound like the starter is bad to you? _________________ 61 so34 flip seat

Starter will engage with ignition off, or in run position, or even if you took out the switch, if you jumper from the terminal on the solenoid that is connected to the battery positive terminal to the smaller red wire on the solenoid.
Right now sounds like bad solenoid, or bad ignition, or bad connections between the two. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Here is an image stolen from the gallery:
The cable on the left is from the battery and to the ignition switch. Lots of other wires there due to being late bus.
On right you can see that terminal is connected to the starter motor itself.
Top is the solenoid terminal, that is where the voltage from the ignition switch goes when you turn it to "Start" position.
Lower terminal is due to late bus, and not on earlier starters.
So if you remove the top terminal wire and check voltage with helper turning ignition switch to "Start" position. What voltage do you get?? _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

So what voltage did you find there or did you even get your VW running? _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

12.7 volts at coil means voltage drops all the way back to charging system and or charging system NOT up to snuff. 13.5 at coil is where it should be assuming you are running an alternator at idle. Generator at idle is less. Cant remember exact gen idle charging specs. I soldered my fuse box, headlight switch, and cleaned up grounds, which got much better charging voltage at battery. To an untrained auto electricial tech, just load testing the battery would reveal a weak battery. That was what I was getting, poor voltage. _________________ Waiting for santa to drop off funky green. I can wish can't I???? |

i solved that problem some times by using a new starter. the ones that spin faster, the bosch with reduction gears. not the special ones, the modern standard replacement. they have more torque in difficult situations like that. try it.
these ones. cheap and really good!
