I love seeing photos of Vanagons around the world in beautiful places, climbing mountains, running through mud, camping, in pieces in garages, etc. but I haven't seen a whole lot of mundane photos of Samba members' Vanagons doing thankless jobs like mine did today, hauling crap from the cleaning out of our basement for a remodel.
So, compliments of my foggy cellphone camera....
Here we are at the landfill. You can see the majestic Rocky Mountains in the background. The guy next to me saw me taking photos and said, "uh, what are you doing?"
Another landfill shot. My right rear wheel looks horribly cambered out:
Full of garbage:
Unloading more crap at the storage unit:
My back is killing me, but my basement is empty, they've started to frame it out, and I have an ice cold beer in hand. Happy Friday! _________________ Joe T.

Ha! It's funny you mention that. One of the contractor guys was walking through the garage and said, "you gonna put all that garbage in that cool van?"
I replied, "It ain't a show queen." _________________ Joe T.

Did you check your tires for nails yet? You might what to give the van a good wash, too. My work truck sees the dump up here in Fort Collins once a week and the truck is covered with these tiny specks that don't come off. I suspect it's something they spray on the ground. Denver might have thew same issue. _________________ "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." - Benjamin Franklin |

Had to build a 6' tall - 22' long fence and managed to load all the materials (fence posts, fence boards, 10 - 60lbs. bags of concrete and some other odds and ends in the Westy. Good thing I've got lift springs and big brakes because with all that weight I was riding HEAVY and LOW.
Haven't taken her to the dumps yet, but I saw a couple unloading their Syncro the last time I hit the transfer station in NW Portland. _________________ '85 Westy |

I use mine for hay too...plus hauling sheep, and even used it once to haul a 12' farm gate! I wish I had a regular one so I wouldn't have to worry so much about all of the extra inside westy features. _________________ 1982 Westy, 1974 412 Variant... Yes, Aircooled's are great! no pics, but I hauled 16 sheets (4x8 feet) of hardiplank siding,a bunch of 2x4's,2x6's,2x10's and few other odds and ends in one trip from HD. made several trips two years ago we did some remodeling on the old homestead. did a couple of other loads of 12 sheets of hardiplank and assorted materials.loaded 16 bags (50lbs each) of the 32 bags of concrete in it and decided it was better to rent a truck than make two trips in a way overloaded van. |

Don't have any pics from work, buy my westy has served as my work truck for the last year. I'm a carpenter, and I haul all my tools and misc. junk to and from the jobsite. Even a westy has a ton of interior space!! _________________ '89 Syncro Westy

My van routinely hauls a ton of music gear. Everything you see on the stage here came out of my van!

...and more honest labor...
Drove the wife, kids, and mother-in-law to some relatives' farm in Canon City on Saturday. Got 20 MPG but think I have a bad fuel gauge due to some screwy readings (I know there's a topic in here on this subject, I'll do a search) and fought some nasty winds on the way down. Also, my tires are now THUNDEROUSLY loud. I appreciate their toughness, but I must be getting old because I can't stand the constant noise they make on the highway.
My wife's uncle and his son-in-law loved the Vanagon. They said they knew where one exactly like mine is behind a barn near their place. I'm going back in three weeks and will report what I find.
They had plenty of beds in the house, but I decided to sleep in the top bunk. It was a little chilly and they all thought I was crazy, but I slept like a rock.

You guys shouldn't be getting your Vanagon all dirty haulin' stuff...
You should use a Jetta.

All of this...
came out of this...
Don't mind the rust -- hehe -- it's better now.
A different Westy, hauling a culvert for my new driveway:
Despite my precaution, I lost the passenger side mirror rolling the culvert off the top

Girl Scout cookie transport.
At stop lights, I thought I was going to get carjacked. I should have used a Brinks truck instead.
