Well........ Actually the first time it leaked ATF was late August and I was in Fargo ND....... That's part of the reason he didn't make this trip, I need to pull the unit and reseal it. The bulk of it is coming out of the Band Piston cover.

In ND it was intermixing with the Differntial oil AND leaking.
I drove it another 5,500 miles after the discovery but it was Summer.

I think we need to have a "van-shaming" thread.

Post a picture of your van with a sign around its neck saying what it did bad.

For reference see: http://www.dogshaming.com/

Hi DJ
Didn't you already reseal your transmission in your weekender build thread or was that someone else?

I need to reseal my automatic as well. Leaks are smaller but still need to be fixed

Cheers

I have one of those pics! Slave cylinder failure in my case. Now I just put newspaper down if I'm going to be gone for awhile. Smile

I had to laugh at my own sins when I saw your photo. You word selection brought me back to puppy training days. It is like that moment you come home after an unrealistically long day. You know what you are walking into. Certainly the dog had an accident. You want to say something so the dog doesnt think it is ok to relieve itself whenever, at the same time you know it is your fault. I always thank my van when it gives up the ghost at my house, especially after returning home from an epic trip and the next day or so it lays down.

Does Coolant count?
Bad Thermo & Bad stage 1 fan resistor made Red sick for a long time. Sad

Bonus points if you can find the dog that got a free ride in a tow truck later.

Like the blown master cylinder after my 2,000 mile trip from MT to UT and back. Well, actually it became noticeable on the way home but luckily not too bad.

Well, I've put up with this Van and it's poor untrained Potty habits for awhile now.

I fiddled with it over the Winter but failed to pull the unit out, no big trips were planned until 2018. I had the luxury of time! ....... My how things change!

I was thinking that the leak was various bad orings on the governor cover, then the 3rd gear piston but now It is clearly the huge "space shuttle" Oring between the differential and the auto trans unit, not the weep hole between the two seals.

It leaks most while parked and cools off.
The nuts are tight holding the two units together.

The unit works fine, I've a trip coming up and want to postpone a "proper" reseal and rebuild of the unit until Winter.

I'm thinking of some sort of external sealant for 5,000 miles.
Yeah..... I know........ It isn't the right thing to do, but I don't want to soil friends and families driveways on my trip.
I rarely take stop gap measures but for this leak it may be just the ticket.

Dave

I do keep cardboard under the rear bed mattress above the engine cover, I may add some inventory.
Fortunately empty box replenishment is available free almost everywhere across the entire lower 48!

Here's the cardboard from overnight...... Almost need a bigger sheet!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

You can see the cleansing action of the ATF has clearly identified the leak.....

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

It is just as clear that it is NOT the weep hole......

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

It is definitely the large lower Oring, it is dry up higher on the seam.....

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I'm draining the ATF, I'll drop the oil pan and allow it to drip for awhile.
Doing this should remove the reserve of oil that drips out.
I can then use carb cleaner/brake cleaner and cleanse the lower mating area.

I'm thinking that a nice tight bead of "The Right Stuff" in that (what I Think is a) non pressurized gap should hold the bleeding at bay for awhile?

BTW.....
Best mod ever!
An Auto Trans pan DRAIN PLUG!!!! Wink
