agreed.
It's very cool that you are collecting and sharing your knowledge of the old Kad kits... I would bet there are a bunch of guys who would tell you it was there first bolt-on performance item for there VW.
It would be cool to see a reprint of an old "low-buck, bolt-on" article where Kads, a 009 dist, a header, and a little tuning made a little 1600dp stocker bug into a completely different animal to drive.
I haven't seen a fix for the linkage problem, which isn't really a per se linkage problem, it's the fact that the kits came with to of the same 'hand' carbs, i am sure to keep the cost down (where both the throttle shaft need to be rotated the same direction to open). As the engine expands with heat, the throttle shafts get further and further apart. The steel linkage arm expands, just not the same amount as the aluminum and iron engine, causing one idle screw off it's seat and opening it. So you have to choose, sync them cold, OR sync them hot.
To overcome this, do tuners convert one carb to the other hand, so that the linkage can be set up to pull left and right, like conventional VW weber and dellorto kits? _________________ 2-time NASA Pro Racing Champion, Bonneville 130 Club and 150 Club Memeber, BRS Pro Gas racer |

Tom, I use the Scat linkage on about 85% of the kits I build, maybe even more. While it does not reverse the throttle shaft direction, it is made of aluminum, and for whatever reason, seems to help keep things nice and synch'd. Gene Berg makes (made?) a hex-bar type linkage that pulled from the top (maybe someone could post a photo....HINT HINT) that was pretty cool. Obviously if Berg was involved, it was RIGHT.
Many problems that I've seen people have with the original linkage can be attributed to the balls being loose and/or popping out of their sockets. This is due to not setting them up properly, and/or lack of regular lubrication.
I'll get around to putting up some more info at some point. I know people are out there that have some more cool stuff to add here like hazetguy and glandnut did. Where are the photos guys? _________________ KaddieShack.com - Kadron Carburetor Specialists, VW Parts and Accessories

I'm one of those guys, back in the late 70's. Big bore 1641 drop-in with Kadrons on single port heads, 009 and a Monza exhaust. That motor ran great, had plenty of power, and I never had any problems with syncing the carbs or linkage popping off. |

I hate to say I just threw out an old school linkage/fuel lines that I had sitting around for ages.
I had 2 sets of SP manifolds, one with the tube still in one piece.(my buddy still has it sitting in his garage) I couldn't get it to seal when we tried to install it, so I used the two singles. The reason may be that if you tweaked the tube the manifolds wouldn't line up and seal right.
The tube did add a ton of support for those 2 fat carbs sitting on the 6mm SP studs.
i also had a set of the original shield type air cleaners but one had a spagetti looking tube for the breather line that looked stock.
I might still have my original kadron kit box around somewhere. I recieved a box of parts from someone once and noticed that it was an old school kad kit box so i put it away. Same logo as the red sticker. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

Realized a little while ago that while the first set of kads I used was in '75 or '76, I'm pretty sure a friend installed a set in his car in '73 or '74. And in Canada it takes a while for everything to make it's way up here... _________________ On a lifelong mission to prove (much to my wife's dismay) that Immaturity is Forever!! |

I was told by a friend of mine that kadron's first were originally used on puma's. Puma came out in 64. I went through the gallery and a few of them had kadron's. im no expert. Just giving you somewhere to look for more history. _________________ Wanted Victoria motors licence plate frame.

This thread is great!! I've had Kadrons for the past 10 years or more and love them.
When people ask me what carbs are the best. I say "I like Kadrons. They are easy to set up and are very reliable."... Then they say "I'm going to buy Webers." Why do people ask?... Anyways...
Keep the info coming. I like finding old Kadron stuff, too. People think I'm goofy for like Kadrons so much... Glad to hear I'm not the only one.
I'll snap some pictures of my collection, too. _________________ Fresh Air VW Car Club

I can confirm that the solex 40 carbs were part of the early Puma production line as an option they had linkage similar to Okrasa 36 horse links Beautiful Aluminium manifolds with Puma kit cast into the manifold tall air cleaners as well as smaller flat ones. The carbs themselves were OEM on the brazilian opel 4.1liter straight six engine. As Kadron made Puma exhausts etc it might have been a mutual type of design. My 1973 Puma had them as OEM equipment coupled with a Resolit Dizzy.
I will see if I can take a few Photos

Did the linkage mount on the bracket that is welded to the shroud? Do you have a picture of it?

Hi on the original fan housing the bracket was welded directly to the fan housing and it cracked so i made a base of 2mm plate and welded everything together, it is a serious hassle to weld in that spot as the metal is thin and warps easily. I suspect this welding was also the reason all Pumas had repainted fan housings

This is a cool thread! I have been dealing with these carbs for 8 or 10 years and I've often wondered how many variations there are of the linkage, manifolds, carbs, air cleaners, and even exhaust systems.
I know a guy that has an engine that is nearly identical to yours! Haha

My current 1679cc single port build with Kadrons:
I didn't think this square fuel line block was anything special, but I might polish it and replace the round one at some point.
I like the Scat linkage a lot, but I really like the Kadron steel bellcrank with the fuel line mount on top much better than the Scat center pull setup...So until I can fab up an alumium crossbar for the stock Kadron linkage, I'll be using the steel 2pc. setup that I modified for CB heim joints. I need 2 more (right hand threaded) heim joints to do the z bar connector on the factory linkage though and I'm too cheap (read:Poor) right now to spring for them. The factory 5mm fine pitch ends are so freakin close to a 10-32 pitch standard thread that I was able to thread a 10-32 die over the stock linkage parts without a die handle...I think it's like .006" difference in major diameter between the two (with the kadron threads being larger than the CB joints), plus the metric pitch converts to 34 TPI, which fits a 10-32 pitch gauge just fine. Although not as safe, I also like the (more hidden) single return spring as opposed to the return spring for each carb. I'll be making refinements as I go.

Cool topic! Ran these on my first VW back in 78-79, replaced a Zenith centermount I couldnt tune. The Zenith got 13MPG on a 1750. Bolted on the kad kit, sync'ed best i could and got 24mpg, Its when I finally liked that Ghia. Had them on several sand cars w/ AJSims tricks, always worked well.
ok, What is the correct way to pronounce??...Kad-ron, Ka-drones....?? |

Hey Armand,
Very cool info. It would be great to have some documentation of the use of Kads pre-1965. That would make them legal under 36hp Challenge guidelines for the DSS category. I've searched online for the Opel Kapitan 4.1L, found pictures and history, but so far no engine detail information. |

Hi the Air cooled Pumas were only built from 1969 so earlier info would not come via Puma.
The carbs were used on the Brazillian opels which were re named Chevrolet for their production.

I've found info about the Chevy Opels with the 250 c.i. engine, but nothing about the carburetors used. Hope to find something definitive like a picture or part number. Thanks.
