Bought my 61 bug with these installed. Been putting the bug together for a few years now and just finished up the engine.

This pic was taking at night, but it has the chrome air filters with the heavy duty filters.

I'll see if I can remember to take a few pics of the air filters and see if it has a date stamp on them.

PostPosted: Fri Jan 04, 2013 10:45 am    Post subject: Copper crossbar Reply with quote

I'm currently rebuilding a set that I got used. They came with a one-piece crossbar, and last night I hit it with the soda-blaster to clean it up for paint. I was surpirised to see that it appears to be made of copper. Has anyone noticed the one-piece crossbar is copper? I'm trying to figure out if that is factory, or if I have a custom creation. It has two welded on tabs for the short linkage to attach, and return spring. Those appear to match what I've seen in other's pictures.

Also it has a slight bend to it. I haven't bolted them up yet, but imagine this is intentional to clear the generator. Does anyone know if they came bent when new?

Copper/brass is early style. It's probably better than the steel shafts, as the expansion rates will match the width "growth" of the engine more closely, keeping synchronization more constant as the engine warms and cools. Shafts were straight. Smile

Another question, the short rod that connects the bellcrank to the crossbar on mine is straight, not offset like all others I've seen. Does anyone know if that was standard at one time? Are the bends in the connecting link there to provide clearance, or to improve the connection angle, or leverage?

I'm wondering if the one-piece crossbars ever had different thread size and pitch than the typical M5 X .8 mm. I just picked up 4 of the Mercedes ball sockets (from recommendation on other posts) and they fit on the short connecting rod, but not on the crossbar ends. They are both right-hand thread, so that's not the issue. The Mercedes part is M5 X .8 so the crossbar ends are either SAE, or a coarser pitched metric. I wonder if it is original, or if the previous owner welded on his own ends for some reason. This is on a copper crossbar. Wondering if the Kadron collectors out there have any input. Thanks!

It's been awhile since I posted on this thread. Glad to see it's still alive and people are interested in it!!!

I'm still very much a nutcase about these carbs... even more so than I ever have been before. We've taken these carbs to a whole different level over the past several years, and I'm loving every minute of it.

With that in mind, I thought I'd share what Tom Lieb (the owner of Scat Enterprises) sent me in the mail today.

It blew me and my staff away.

Check it out:

An almost NOS copy of a Kadron catalog from (what I'm thinking) is the early 80's, based upon some of the products inside. He thinks it's late 70's. Who knows?

We searched for a publication date and other subtle clues as to when it was actually published for Kadron dealers, but have only been able to narrow it down to between a few years timeframe. It's been in Tom's desk drawer for eons, I suppose. A very, very special thanks to him. Buy Scat products dammit, whenver you have the chance!!!

This was a very cool gift.

Here's what the set looked like back then. It was available with steel mani's in dual port and single port, and aluminum ones as an option. This is much earlier than I anticipated.

The air cleaners were still "shielded", which is pretty early in the game, but shields were available in chrome. I don't know how many hundreds of Kaddies I've seen... probably thousands by now. I've never seen (or even seen photos of) shielded chrome air cleaners. I've seen plenty of the zinc or painted ones. Never chrome. The "super late" OG Kadrons had "big logo" air cleaner lids that had a chrome option. The shielded ones, though... they're pretty damned rare in chrome if I've never seen 'em.

Check out that NOS set of metal fuel lines. Damn!!! That's cool with the clear tubing and super straight passenger's side fuel rail.

Check out the first pic: This vintage had the later "white belts". This was early, but not super-duper early. Those ones had black (or even rarer) brown belts, or insulator plates, as discussed earlier in this thread.

How about the three different rebuild and repair kits they had available? Holy smoke! Some of those individual parts are worth a fortune now by themselves, even used. Discharge nozzles with the check ball... Accelerator pump drive rods... Wow.

Anybody have one of these kits layin' around in a box? Email me!!!

Notice they still had brass floats in the rebuild kits, but they had plastic ones in the carb breakdown.

Check out all the other stuff that was available. How about those wheels?

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Notice the badge on the linkage post had already changed to red/white. All you guys who have the three color badge have earlier than this. We see more of the three color badges than ones of this vintage. Kinda weird because we see more late "big logo" air cleaners than these two color badges, too.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Very interesting.

Notice it's already the two-piece linkage in every picture, too. Super earlies were one piece and had that godawful clip!

I'm thinking early 80's.

Tom thinks 70's.

And to answer the last poster... Yes. They did change the thread pitch between the early linkages and the late ones.

I have more crazy stuff that I'll post at some point that people have brought me, and that I've wandered across...........

Super cool stuff. I've always loved my Kadrons. The alloy wheels in this picture are just Rabbit GTI wheels. Still a really cool wheel though.

I had the chrome air filter housings. Probably 25 years ago. Sold the carbs to my friend to put on his girlfriends baja. The housings got powdercoated pink.

Those GTI wheels date the catalogue a bit. They were offered on 83-84 GTIs Very neat piece of history.

Cool to attach a date on it.

Actually, just to clarify, that last pic with the wheels came from a different "insert", rather than the same catalog that the carbs were in. Maybe it was just tossed in the same drawer as the carb catalog? Maybe they were different dates of publication? Maybe they were two pieces of literature from the same year?

I dunno.

Cool tho!
