When I was a little kid, my family made an annual trek out to visit my mom's side of the family in Denver. There were TWO amusement parks,
both in north Denver, Lakeside Amusement Park and Elitch's Gardens.
Elitch's, if I'm remembering correctly, had a ride-along fire engine just like this. It drove you around the grounds, and you either sat inside the bed or stood on the running board on the back. I remember riding on the
back of it when we visited the park when I was about ten yrs old. That would have been 1957.
It was built on a VW pickup chassis. Anybody from Denver back in the day remember that?? |
According to the builder, Darley Fire Trucks in Illinios, they built only two of these, both for Kiddieland in Chicago. |

Holy crap. Awesome that you have pics of that bus- more history:
It's NOT the same as the kiddieland truck. It was built out of a 57' panel that had been - either rolled or a tree fell on it. Can't remember which. It has two sets of stock wheels (duallie!) on the rear- the 'outside' wheel is bolted on inside out. If you look at the front you'll notice it's all flat- that panel is actually a section of the roof the builder salvaged to better mimic a true firetruck. It has a water pump that work the hoses to spray water on hot days. There was originally a 'one-off' mechanical H20 pump that ran off the crankshaft- I think a local VW shop still has it on a shelf.
It's resided in a fire station a few miles away from me, but I haven't seen it driven in many years. I'd guess it's either gone now or ...? _________________

From what I've read since this thread started, there was more than 1 "Kiddieland" in the Chicago area.
Ridinretro's picture is one of two firetrucks from the best-known and longest lasting Kiddieland in Melrose Park, IL. As far as I know, both are still in possession of the park's owners and were not included in the auction. Neither of them deteriorated to the condition of the truck that the OP posted and they both had white roofs.
The OP's picture is from "Hollywood Kiddieland" which was at McCormick and Devon Aves. on Chicago's far north side. It was owned by a WWII veteran and his family and I'm not sure when it closed.
The Darley company could have built the trucks for both parks as they used to be located in Melrose Park. (Update - the OP's picture shows a Darley badge (I think) on the lower corner of the body. Two pictures of the Melrose Park Kiddieland truck that I found show the Darley badge on the lower corner of the body on the driver's side.)
Have fun and update us on the progress!!! _________________ Kirk

I saw this bus at a parade in Wenachee, WA about 15 years ago. _________________ '67 13 Window

It is a neat bus/truck, but in reality it would take buckets of cash to restore it. $500 may be a bit low but I doubt anyone would pay thousands for it in the condition it sits. Nice original fire truck buses don't command high dollars because they are not practical daily drivers and I would think this bus would fall into that category. |

vdubden: I hope you haven't gone and put a down payment on anything based on selling this truck, it's WAY cooler then it is valuable IMO. Yes, everyone was enthusiastic about it but it's a total novelty that belongs in a collection. Finding a collector willing to take on the project, restore it and then store it might prove challenging. |
