Good question, guess it all depends on how much $$ is left in the kitty when all the body work, paint, interior, etc are complete ! That said, what I WANT is a nice stroker motor in the 2110 to 2165 range. My purpose for the car is a Sunday, weekend, nice weather driver. It won't be a race or strip car. Street only. I'm shooting for between 130 and 160 RELIABLE hp at the flywheel. Been doing lots of research, talking to local shops. I'd like for someone local to build the engine and tranny. Actually, I'm trying to keep as much as I can local. Speaking of the transaxle, it will have to be the standard beefed up specimen with hardened shift keys, welded 3rd/4th, HD side cover, etc. etc. My timeline is realistically next spring (2011) for the drivetrain, however. We'll see. _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:

Now the real work, OR PROGRESS, begins. In order to do the paint and body work right, the only option was to have the body media blasted by a local vendor. Who knows what's under that paint. For F sake, my car was AT LEAST three colors when I bought it, so it was time to take off all the years of paint and bondo or whatever else happened to this car and find out what I REALLY have to deal with. What I found is this car is just as solid as I thought it was. Very few surprises. Enjoy!
A thing of beauty:
This car is SOLID:
Here you can see the front clip graft line. They did a decent job!
All pictures were taken at the school's shop. Thanks to my instructor for letting me bring the car to my class! Next: Body gets PPG epoxy primer! Thanks everyone,

Yeah 57 and older is 2 rib. I think you definitely have a 57 or older front clip.
Plus it looks like L258 Inca Red which started in Aug 57 so it might just be a late 57 clip??
Looks great keep it up! |

You are doing great. Don't worry about boring us with your pics, it helps me keep going on my oval. I am in the process of dropping my front beam and your pictures helped. I just can't clean well, still on the frame! Your car is going to blow your avatar out of the sky, keep it up. _________________ Central Jersey Volkswagen Society - President |

PROGRESS! Well, fresh out of the booth, I present my oval rag in epoxy primer. I chose black b/c I plan on shooting this bad-boy in two-stage PPG black when it's all said and done. One step at a time. Enjoy
If you look carefully you can see some of the front clip work in this photo. Not a bad fix -- I bet the fenders will line up just fine. Would be cool to know who did that work, when and where, wouldn't it?
Other than the rear apron, the rear of the car, including engine compartment, is near perfect. Amazing:
Media blasting exposed only a tiny, tiny bit of rust under the heater tubes. Otherwise it's perfect here, too:
Front of the car:
luggage compartment again, mint:
If you look closely at the bottom of the rear quarter, you see pin holes. Will need a fix. I hope it's not the tip of an iceberg:
Interior, dash:
What do you guys think? So all this work happened while the body was at school. In the meantime, I have been working on the pan and chasis at home. Lots more progress to show there, plus, I have been working on repairing metal on the body since it got primered. That includes front apron and spare tire tray, quarter panels, rear apron, etc. Stay tuned, and thanks for lookin'!

Dude, Vic, nice ride man. Bad-ass! Shootin' for the same look for this car. More notes on progress:
Three wheels are at Show Quality Metal finishing for polish as I type this.
I know, I know, many of you will think this is sacrilege, but I'm going with 16x6 fronts Fuchs and 16x7 rears. I just really like the look of the larger Fuchs. BUT, I need another 16x7. Anybody have one? Prefereably in WA State, or better yet, in the SEATTLE area? Does not have to be restored, just without major damage, dents, etc. Color does not matter.
Front beam is narrowed and painted. Soon to be fully assembed by Franklin's
Rest of beam assembly will begin once parts are ordered.
Question: Anybody ever put together a huge parts list and then go out to the different vendors for best price on EVERYTHING? _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:
