Howdie all! Well I have been decidedly silent the last few months while my car has been at the upholstery shop for the headliner install. It has been a bit of a tough go, I will say that. The first try by the trimmer was lousy. There, I said it. Straight-up sub-standard. But I have to say, the SOB stuck by his guns, and said he would fix it. From that point, we went through even more issues, even with Lenny and his crew, as we needed some replacement headliner material, BUT everyone came through. They got it done. I just picked up the car and I have to say -- at first viewing in not the best light, it looks good. Pics to follow. Exciting times. _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:

The p.o. of my 65 tried to hang the headliner himself, he gave up, left parts of it hanging and parts of it are missing. I might just have known local pro start over from scratch on mine. |

Well as promised here are some pics of the final headliner and ragtop product.
I am pretty happy with the end result, especially considering what the first effort looked like. Unfortunately life is getting in the way of completing this car. We are in the process of a local household move that will slow this build down to a crawl -- long story. Plus I am trying to get my 65 bug sold and out the door before then so I don't have to store two bugs! At any rate, thanks for looking. More on all that later. _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:

I can’t believe it’s been this long since I updated this thread. Holy sheiza! But life has gotten in the way basically the last year. We did a household local move in 2013 that took all our time. Part of that process included getting our old house ready for sale and then the actual selling part. What a fiasco. The good thing is it was all wildly successful and now we're in the new house. I’ve been privately widdling away at this car and the other project in my sig line. As of next month, it's been five years since I started the 57! I am proud to say that for the most part, this is not a ‘check book’ car…I did not go out and buy a completed car. I have had my hand in most every aspect of the build. BUILT NOT BOUGHT. The work I HAVE had done was farmed out to guys and shops who are experts at what they do (expertise that I don't have); and for the most part these guys are hobbyists who love VWs! Enough babbling, it’s time to dig into this project again and get this car on the road for the summer! Things to do in the near term are painting of engine tin and fuel tank as well as a bunch of little scheit like the little metal covers in the spare tire area, OG brake fluid reservoir, tunnel access cover, steering wheel, etc etc. I also need to plumb the car for fuel and crankcase ventilation, not to mention lowering the car, final fitting the doors, installing the interior, 100% of the car’s wiring, blah blah blah. Ton of work still needed! With that, time to get to work, here’s a start of the gas tank. From the research I’ve done, this is a correct for late oval unit. It had some pin holes and needed to be stripped of it’s rust and paint, as well as seal the inside, and body work and paint the outside. Here goes….
For some reason I don't have a before pic. But work completed so far includes stripping the old paint with a wire wheel, then chemically treating the inside and out with POR-15's system of first cleaning, then surface treating with phosphoric acid to eliminate rust. Next up is body work nd paint which I will start tonight. _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:

I went through this thread really enjoying your build. This shows people just what is involved in building a really nice car. It's one thing to see a car that is finished but it's another to see it go from start to finish.......fantastic job!. _________________ This is my 23rd year in the Auto Body/Paint Game!

^^ Thanks for the kind words Matt, really really appreciated! Especially coming from someone who is a expert / professional body man. I remember when I first got this car, or just before, I was scouring the internet for info about body work and paint and how to use them, WHICH materials to use in certain situations, the different sand paper grits to use in which order, blah blah blah and I came across your thread in the paint and body forum on the Samba here. It was VERY helpful! So you can take some credit in my 'educatin'! haha _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:

Hi,
Came to find out if my oval should have a 3 hole or 4 hole hood latch and got totally distracted by this great build. I love the headliner and american style trim in the windshield. Great work ! |

This is my first post! I signed up just to say what an excellent job you've done on both your projects! I spent several hours going over each thread slowly digesting it for the future.
I have never owned a Beetle, but it's my plan for my next project to be a mid-60's bug. As soon as I find the right car for the right price, I'll be joining this club I plan to hopefully do a budget resto-mod with a 1914cc dual carb setup. I've picked out what I'd want to do, but now comes the saving-up part.
How is this project coming along? Have you gotten it on the road yet? You're so close! |

Welcome to the Samba man! Porject is really kicking now that the 65 is sold and off the premises. To tell you the truth, I really started wrenching on this car again on July 4th, 2014 when I got the other car advetised for sale. That was my goal before I started working on it. Hate to admit it, but besides painting the gas tank and some other bits, I have not really worked on the car since Feb 2012.
Not the case now, so a decent update will be coming soon! _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:

Well I have to apologize to the Samba community. It's been way too long since I updated this thread. I have been meaning to do this for awhile. No excuses, let's dive back into this build!
I decided I want to run the stock steering wheel that came with the car. Doing so I think will look awesome and keep to what's left of its originality
LOL
So first things first is to sand and prep for a bit of filler, then primer then paint
