Wow that paint turned out amazing! It looks perfect everywhere.
That color combo is very original.
Right away it reminded me of the orange used for the GT3's.

And that interior really compliments it! Take your time on installing parts, if you get frustrated move to an easy piece, I would hate to see you scratch anything!
Congrats man! |
Thanks Schwing good advice about putting this thing back together. Yeah that first scratch or chip is gonna hurt bad. Oh well, it WILL happen, just a matter of time. I intend to drive this thing too-- not let it sit in a garage or in/on a trailer. So I expect chips. At least that's what I'm telling myself now LOL.
At any rate, we got all our clear coat issues fixed so I am trailering the car from the paint booth back to the body shop tomorrow (45min drive). There, next step is to wet sand and buff this baby. After that I consider the metal, paint and body work freaking DONE!!!!
Meanwhile I am still not quite done getting the pan ready to receive the painted body just yet. More on that later. _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:

The orange is nice! Can't wait to see it assembled.
I see a lot of Martin Senour products under the bench in the one pic, did you spray Crossfire? _________________ Brother's 56 Thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=652839 |

I only used PPG paints. Deltron DBC base coat /clear coat. The paint booth is located in a shop (not mine) where a lot of work on small race cars occurs. They are in a race class called Baby Grands. They use cheap paints (Napa Crossfire brand ) on the fiberglass shell bodies since they practically have to repaint at least a section of the car after every race! _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:

Thanks Ovalshark!
Got a few more pics for you guys while we finish color sanding and move forward to our next goal of Feb 1st to get the headliner and ragtop installed in the car. Received a large Wolfsburg West order in the last few days. I also sent my OG period-correct speedo to North Hollywood Speedometer a few weeks ago, and they are putting together a few other surprises for me too (surprise for all of you, not me). So, in the meantime I wanted to post about painting the vents above the engine. Not sure I touched on this in a previous post(s), but I wanted to rant on this topic (ok call it whining). Actually, painting them was easy. The prep was NOT. Anyway, after doing a lot of research, I found guys are doing these two ways: 1 remove the metal portion under the vents, as in cut all the spot welds ( ) of the metal support bracket that the decklid hangs on, paint everything, then epoxy, glue, rivet whatever, the bracket back in place. That just seemed weird to me. The alternative, which is what we did, was to sand, prime, sand and sand everything some more behind there by whatever means possible. You can actually access the area from either side/underneath if you wiggle and cram your hands back there. Then you have to sand the actual vents from the outside. I probably have 40 hours of work just in these steps. Once you do finally get to the painting process, first you mask the vents to paint behind (as in through) them, then unmask and wait to dry thoroughly. We thought maybe we could use a jamb gun or even an airbrush to paint between the vents, but we found that those smaller guns didn’t flow enough paint so we used our standard HVLP gun and let it fly. Once we were happy with the result behind there, we had to pull off all the masking before it dried. Next day, work began to paint the vents themselves. First, to prevent overspray from ruining all the work you did back there, you have to mask BEHIND the vents. We crammed a bunch of paper back there to protect the area. THEN you can paint the vents and get a nice result. Which we did! Here are the last stages of painting the vents.
Painstaking masking:
I thnk this was after base (no clear). Clear was very tough to spray back here:
We painted the vents with the rest of the car. Again, base only no clear here:

More pics of the car after paint, but before color sanding and buffing. This was just days after coming out of the paint booth:
And back at Don's shop after a nice cut and buff:
And now it's time to work to get this motor built up and broken in. Sorry this photo is sideways.
Got the full flow fittings in
Notice here I scheit-canned that ugly CB generator stand (see above) for a new chrome one, and got the oil cooler adapter and Magna-Spark disty installed, as well as a billet fuel block off:

You might recall I initially got aftermarket chinese cooling tin from CB, well they were crap and I sent it all back and then sourced some OG cooling tin locally. What an incredible day-and-night difference in fit, finish and function! Well long story short, the way the timing with the body is coming along, I wanted to get this motor broken in before body goes on the pan. I am about halfway progress-wise to get the tin body worked and painted. Hence the treated metal tin you see here (it will be painted soon):
Good enuff to get her started and broken-in. Notice the temp disty location install and the Jerry-rigged bastard linkage consisting of CB base plates and filter housings, along with the Redline cross-bar. I'll be using a CSP linkage (in the mail), OG spark plug tube to hide stuff, and the disty will be hidden somewhere else too. Oh, and a breather box setup will be fabbed up later.
I'm amazed at the quality of the A-1 exhaust, and the work Art Thraen and his crew did on the 45 Dellorto carbs. Killer. Other notables are I am using a non-welded OG cooling fan.
The engine builder is local and a super cool guy. He agreed to help us break in the motor on the pan so we are going to his shop to accomplish this. Ready to rock! Cheers and thanks for looking. _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:

Well scheit, went to go Youtube a video of hte break-in and it looks to require you to open a gmail account. Does that sound right? I passed for now. Is there a better way to post a video?
At any rate, break-in went AWESOME, KILLER, I cannot believe how good the engine sounds. It coughed a little bit at the very first few revolutions, but Tim adjusted the timing a bit on the fly, got it nailed and wow it burred for the next 15 minutes at 2000rpm or so. Milestone reached.
Believe it or not, we reached an even bigger & better milestone this past Sunday when I brought the car home after 13 months. BODY WORK AND PAINT IS COMPLETE. A big thanks to Don Brown you are a stud -- it's been an honor and a pleasure to work with you and get to know you and your family. We are all really happy how it turned out. Adriana said it takes her breath away every time she walks out into the garage. She LOVES the color. Pics to come. _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:

Before we could call paint and body complete, we wanted to undercoat it. We used the UPOL Raptor truck bedliner kit. This stuff really really impressed us. Very reasonably priced, and comes with the spray gun. Lays down incredibly well, dries shiny. One major reason to undercoat a bug is to protect the fenders from damage, say from rocks and scheit coming off the tires and 'starring' the paint. NIGHTMARE! Well I laid it on thick under the fenders, in the area above the tires. Other obvious benefits are corrosion protection, and sound deadening. All I can say this undercoating was like a cherry on top for this car. WOW
The next step was a biggie too. BODY BACK ON THE PAN! Another major milestone....hopefully this is the last time the body comes off in my lifetime! LOL
Next steps are to load this baby up and get her home...
Back at the homestead for the first time in 13 months...

Nothing looks better that a freshly painted shell on it's pan, nothing!
That must fell quiet nice to have that back in the garage, looking like it doe's.
As much as I love the look of polished paint under a bug, no one is ever going to see it on a real driver, the undercoat is a great idea.
I look forward to seeing the rest go together. _________________ If you can't join them, beat them! |

^^^^Thanks guys ! Yes it goes feel good. Strangely good. It's almost like I'm at peace with it being home after 13 months -- although it's probably more that I'm just exhausted from working my ass off every weekend to get it here! Honestly, I think I might just take my time getting it assembled... Ok we'll see about that. I have an appointment on Feb 16th with an upohlstery shop that Lenny and his crew recommended up here in the Pacific NW to put in the headliner, ragtop and glass in the car . I have a bit of work I want to do before that time. Been tinkering after work this week....I prepped and primed some small parts such as my steering column bracket, & turn signal housing. Hope to final paint those tomorrow. _________________ Jet City 1957 VW Oval Rag Build:
