|
|
I just picked up a 1969 1500 motor that is in relatively good condition and complete. The motor was in a car my buddy just picked up and the car was stored inside and hasn't been started in a couple years. Before I tear into anything I am trying to get it to start even if it is for a few seconds, just to let me know where I am with this thing. It was never froze up and the carb had original air cleaner on it which kept things pretty clean.
I can crank it over and I am getting gas but no spark.I am not sure that the starter is spinning it fast enough even with a jumper pack on the battery.Would there be spark with slower cranking or does it need to reach full speed? If I can get this thing to bark at me just once I will have a lot more hope that it can be brought back to life.Any suggestions on trying to start a motor that has been sitting a while? I am sure a lot of you guys have your own little tests you try with these dinosaurs. Thanks for any help. |

Spark is not dependant on speed. If it rotates it should spark. Using a NON powered standard test light clipped to ground, check for power at the coil on the black wire key on and key in crank position.
Move the test light to the other coil term {green wire leading to the dist } and check to see if the test light flashes when cranking. If not check to see if the points are clean and opening and closing all the way.
Check to see if the dist rotor is installed and that it turns when the engine is turned over.

fastest first test u can do is taking another coil and testing without mounting. very quick.
if it isn't the coil, u do all the test. |

Thanks for the advice.I did the coil replacement with no spark still, then checked the green wire to the coil was actually missing. The wire was broke off inside the grommet at the base of the distributor.Had an extra, threw it on and presto.....off and running. Thank you for keeping me focused on the simple stuff first without "over thinking" it.I'm guilty of that from time to time. For the motor not being started in years it actually runs and idles nicely.Guess I caught a break this time. Thanks again guys!!! |
