Which year doors are interchangable, I have a 73 which has the earlier type of hinges, but am not to sure if there are other things that make a diffrence. |

With a hinge kit available from Bus Depot, you can use any Bay Window door on your Bus. You would need the kit if you got a later model door, with an earlier one it would bolt right on, except for a '68 which has some one year only components to the door. _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

Thanks, just looked at that i have the earlier style hinge on my 73
The Bus Depot is for fitting '69-76 Bus door to '77-79 Bus. So in theory i should be able to use a 69- 76 door?
I did notice they had a diffrent latch showing years 74 to 79, so swap the hardware off the 73 door if i use a 74-76: http://www.busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=211837015H
Any options on the slider compatability? _________________ 73 Westy

the door stops on different years can be a bit different. I put a 77 i think it was, on my 78, and the doorstop plungers were totally different. it took some grinding on the plunger, to remove about a quarter inch of material, to get it to fit. works fine with that mod. i don't know what years have what stops, but it might be worth looking at when choosing a replacement door. |

So now that the hinge kit is no longer available (Bus Depot says Just Kampers, their source, is no longer making them...)
what do I do?
Got a 74 door all prepped for paint, but can't get it on the 77 bus. Whole resto/paint job on hold. Anyone have pics or specs on the kit to try to fabricate a set? _________________ The Bus came by and I got on, that's where it all began! |

Do you have your old '77 door still for parts? _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

It's at a shop and I'm hoping they saved it. They said it "was junk" so I'm hoping that's not code for, "we tossed it after we got the new/older one." _________________ The Bus came by and I got on, that's where it all began! |

I believe that the door hinges change at `741/2. The 74~76 bus door does not fit to your 73 door. Before purchase doors, make sure that the hinges are correct. |

So is the only fix at this point to try to weld original hinges on the new (older) door.
I was wondering if anyone had used to hinge kit, I might get specs and try to get a machine shop to make a set (maybe even a couple sets so I can share the wealth if I can get them made up.
Any ideas, pictures, measurements? even a pristine late bay driver's door???? _________________ The Bus came by and I got on, that's where it all began! |

AFAIK you can drive out the pin and swap the moving half of the hinges, I haven't done it personally so I can't confirm that. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Well I'll get up there and check on it. I sure hope they didn't toss the original door!
All this to make the door job "easier"...ha, an oxymoron almost like "software upgrade". _________________ The Bus came by and I got on, that's where it all began! |

Thanks for that clarification; always wondered why a '74 door fit/worked so well for my '68! Obviously donor is an early '74. _________________ Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

looks like the hing bracket that bolts to the body was lost with the old door, so we're getting 2 replacements. Looks like the body matching plates need to be swapped out from the original doors as they mount to the body differently on the older models.
Any reson I can't just get shims made at a metal shop and drop those babies in? If any one has used them, are they tight enough to press in, or fairly loose/ slide in?
would I need new pins or am I likely to get the old ones out in usable shape?
As always...any help you have is more than I've got, so thanks!
Oh, and the kit IS available in limited number from Just Kampers, but at L20 to ship it from England would make the whole thing about $50-70 (my exchange rate is off lately) _________________ The Bus came by and I got on, that's where it all began! |

I'm not sure what you mean by "shims" and "slip in", the moving part of the early hinge bolts to the rear side of the brackets that are welded to the door posts on the bus and there's captive nuts in those brackets, the later ones sit on the front side of those brackets and have threads in the the moving part of the hinge, no captive nuts. I've never used or studied the adaptors so I don't know how they attach or function, I imagine the late hinge profile is different on the moving part of the hinge to make up for sitting on the other side of the bracket. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Will a 74-79 bus front door fit on a 1971 bus? Bus Depot sells the hinge kits to go from early doors to later bay windows but what about late doors to early buses? |

I don't think you can do that. I used the hinge kit to bolt in a old style door to my 77. Its just a pin and two plugs you fit in the door hinge piece that bolts to the front frame. Works well . _________________ 70 Ghia Black convert-9/69 build date-stock w/133k 1600 SP-barn find now with a rebuilt tranny and engine

So does that mean the newer bay window front doors can't be made to fit 1971 and down? |

not easy to do as the hinges are different. _________________ 70 Ghia Black convert-9/69 build date-stock w/133k 1600 SP-barn find now with a rebuilt tranny and engine

i also have a 71 and found out that a 69 door doesnt fit well to the passenger side. not a hinge issue, but instead there was no flat spot on the frame of the 69 door to accomodate the dome light switch that is on the body of the 71. i had to remove the switch from the 71 body AND mash a flat spot to get the door to close.
now if you have to replace a driverside door, the dome light switch might not be an issue- i really dont know what they have on that side. |

Hello! Sorry for digging up the post but I am unsure of the answers. I have a 68 westy that needs a passenger door. I have a 73 also but was not sure if they will fit? I don't mind the handles and locks not matching as long as it fits lol! Thanks in advance! |
