Hey gang,
I have two questions.

So my insurance company is about to cut me a big fat check for wind-blown sand damage to Oscar, our 02 Eurovan with 71,000 miles. I will definitely replace the windshield.

Question 1: Should I paint it or pocket the cash?

Less than a year ago I shipped the same vehicle to the States from Germany. Now I’m moving the family to Korea for a couple of years and will need a set of wheels.

Question 2: Should I ship it or store it until we return?

What do you think?
Gary

Unless the sand damage is going to cause a lot of rust I'd keep the cash. YMMV.

anyway, sell the van and dont' be afraid to discover another when you are ready. storage and shipping is overrated.

yeah. I agree.

Unless you've got a lot invested in the van.. in upgrades and emotions.. then the cost of storage over 3 yrs is not a winner. Just pissing money away.

Add that money up and it is the equivalent of big upgrades for another/better van... or a nest egg or kids' college education, etc.

I'd get the paint repaired and sell.

That is, unless your employer is offering a sum of money for storage of personal belongings while you are overseas. In that case store it and as many of your home furnishings tucked way inside it as possible.

Steve, nice wheels but I generally keep 'em stock.

ajdenette, I gave up trying to post pictures a while back. Can't seem to get them reduced in size enough for the site to accept them.

dobryan, I sure won't have to worry about rust in El Paso...in fact, if I were staying here I wouldn't paint it because it is an exercise in futility trying to fight mother nature. On the other hand, the PA winters would quickly produce a lot of rust.

jdirge, Employer will pay to ship my van, but will not pay for storage. Storage is not a problem either in our garage, an outbuilding or ask for more "temporary" storage at my brothers work (my Thing has been there temporarily since 2003 and my doka has been there for a year).

Selling it is probably not in the equation since I bought it for my wife, but she refused to drive in Europe. The only reason I have her Eurovan in Texas is because my Vanagon was still on the boat when I had to leave for the Sun City.

I think that in the end, I will replace the windshield just before my trip back to PA. Then get it painted in PA and put it in storage in July.
