Good morning. Do any of you have any experience with these replacement pieces from Go Westy or others? I have a 1983 Diesel The GW kit says it doesn't fit Diesels but it looks exactly like other suppliers that say they do. What have you done. I would make my own, my originals are practically non existent so can't use as a template.

Somewhere in this forum are DIY instructions, even an template!

Where? I dunno.......

I'll see if I can find it.
Meanwhile pick up some left over election signs, they all seem to gone except for a few Trump ones, some night tiptoe to your neighbors and snag it!

Those realtor open house signs will work too!

Dave’s right on the money, that’s what I used for years. You can spray paint them if you don’t want “UMP” showing.

Goal is to block air flow so it only goes through radiator. Don’t overthink it.

I live in Southwick, but snowbird in Florida until May. Can help you when I return.

Thanks, yes it looks like a great solution. I found the templates on here finally. And hi neighbor! I live in Westfield and grew up in Granby ct so I know Southwick well. When you're back you'll have to check out the van. I'm hoping to have him on the road in a few weeks.

Some discussion here:

While you're at it - you may also wish to renew the baffles on the backside of the grille:

Our 82 diesel has had a later model radiator and aftermarket dual pass AC condenser installed in the nose. I have an aluminum panel for the bottom of the radiator to seal it, but none of the others panels. As is, the diesel takes quite a while to get to temp, but even at 70mph continuous with the AC cranked, I never see above 190 F engine temp even when the ambient is 100 F.

What's my point? I am not 100 % sure they are worth the effort of fitting them. Do some before and after temp studies when you get them in and report back. Your results may vary.

This.

I ran my '81 (air to gas water cooled) with later style radiator for some years w/o baffles. After installing the GW baffles, I did not see any appreciable and/or repeatable difference at the temp gauge or in fan cycling behaviour.

Possible install error aside, I found I had to adapt a means to attach each GW side piece to body. IIRC I used a giant metal screw to attach each to existing hole in body.

Neil.

I've installed the GoWesty radiator baffles on a couple of '83 diesel Vanagons, and I do not recall any fitment issues, or modifications required. The '82s may be different. (And I suspect GoWesty's general dislike of the diesel Vanagon sometimes causes their ignorance of the diesel Vanagon.)

Like others, I also detected no measurable difference in cooling efficiency, despite replacing all cooling system parts. But I enjoy greater confidence in the reliability.

Thanks. Mine is an '83 and was going to try theirs even though they say they don't fit Diesels. I think it should say '82 Diesel. And yes, for such a decent company it's really been annoying how they shit on Diesel vans. I really don't understand that especially seeing the popularity of them and they are in business to make money...why piss off the consumer with attitude??

This is going to become a "tomorrow" task.

Time is running short and the to-do list is long.

Dave, I found the information! But thanks much for offering help. I've decided to create my own and save a few $$
