So I redid the water jackets on a friends 1.9 and I'm going to put it back in shortly and I have a question about the lifters. It's been emptied of oil since I took it out in October, I assume all the lifters are no longer filled with oil. Here's my question should I take them out and refill them Per bentely? I've done this procedure before and yes it can be a PITA I know. Can I disconnect the coil and injectors and just turn it over? Will this create enough oil PSI to pump them back up? Sounds like a long shot to me. How about just throwing it back in and firing it up? I don't want to be looking for a new engine if the worst case happens. Thanks for the input. Hard to believe I've been messing with these vans for 14 years and still learning. _________________ Binger

Why, are you afraid the valves won't open? The lifters only have a 4mm range of depression inside, so even if they're flat they'll bottom internally and get the valves open, they'll just make a hell of a noise doing it. Your choice. Best bet if you install them as-is is to use a light oil and they'll fill and self-adjust much quicker. _________________ Shop for unique Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:

Use a 10w40, better for when it gets hot. It's just the first number, the baseweight, that matters. _________________ Shop for unique Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:

When I did what your doing, I took my lifters apart and cleaned them and refilled then. Now they are quiet even after starting up after winter storage. On a very rare occasion they bled down, but pump up much faster than before. Lot of work? yes. Worth the peace of mind that I did what I could, when I could, and that they are clean? yes
