Hey, I resemble that remark. I'll keep that in mind when I NOT answer your questions, or needing help. Wink Remember, I'm about an hour and a half north of you on I-94. I've also probably got a nice bumper upright floating around here too.

You're absolutely right, I shouldn't bite the hand that feeds me. Smile

What else do you have floating around?

Well, unlike Russ, I don't quite have enough stuff laying around to build a t-3 from scratch, but I can get close. Wink My son already beat you to that. And parts for his old daily driver came out of the back yard too. Rolling Eyes

Here is a concept I threw together to see how it would look. The idea is to build an enjoyable car that will be a nice blend of functionality and asthetics. The goal is to build a vehicle that will hold two people comfortabaly (and their stuff) on a cross country trip. Some day down the road my wife and I would like to venture off on the road with no plans other than to drive and see the country. Kind of like a motorhome dream, but in a T3. Oh, and I'm on a very tight budget and must construct this car with that in mind. This concept includes a lowered stance, paint on the lower half of the nose - perhaps a tuffliner of some sort (?), painting the gold on my current wheels black, painting the running board area, Hella fog lamps, tinted windows, clear bullets, and improved brakes, oh and of course a VW hood emblem. Like I said this is a quick concept. I'm open to seasoned suggestions, and/or personal opinions.

Just as FYI, you can still take the picture with your camera on your preferred resolution, but on the computer run it thru any number of programs (but not Paint or the Windows Photo Viewer) to reduce the size or use more compression before uploading. You should be able to crop, rotate, correct colors, etc. This is also useful when e-mailing pictures to friends. (Looks like Temmett is already familiar with photo editing).

Other than the blacked out areas, and the roof rack, it would look like my old 69 Square. I know yours isn't it, as the kid who bought it is still driving it locally. Wink He loved the window treatment I did too. Cool

Here is the same concept but with two additional changes.

1. Wood slats to replace the metal ones. Since I'm stuck with the current roof rack configuration for a while at least I can suggest the look I want.

2. Blacked out roof rack rail.

Hey, it was nice to meet you at the Old Fort VW show. Too bad the weather didn't cooperate. It was nice to see a few typeIII's last year I don't think we had any. Also not sure this was the first time at this show but in the years past we had about 50 to 75 more cars show up.

Yeah, it was good to mingle with the VW community in the flesh! One of the club members told me they had around 100 cars last year. I'm sure the rain played a part in the lower number of cars. I can't wait for the next one!

Hey Ty, I love what you've accomplished with Bettie. She shined up very nicely. I wish I knew what happened to the other over-rider.

Thanks Zeen! I couldn't have asked for a better car.

I've been quiet on the restoration lately.

It appears as if that is going to change. A few days ago I was rear ended. On the surface the damage looked minimal, the bumper, overrider, rear apron, and left rear quarter panel (see below for pics). Upon further inspection I've discovered that there is buckling underneath from the point of conact. There is also some buckling on the cargo area bed on both sides of the engine, behind the wheel wells. The body shop guys are telling me that the insurance dudes are going to total Bettie out.

Here's where I'm at. hmaroney has a 69 Square for sale. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1059827 I would like to turn lemons into lemonade and prevent another square from being junked out. I'm told the car for sale is straight, so I was thinking I want to use it as a starting point for a full restoration, combining the best of both cars to create one complete, fully restored Square. Obviously I would need to purchase aditional parts.

I have the room to work and the desire to make it happen. Now I need to know if it is feasible. Also, Bettie is my daily driver. I can let her go down from time to time but preferably not for long. I have a two week vacation window coming up that I can devote to this project. Can it be done?

If the body shop you went to doesn't have a straightening rack, then you need to go somewhere else. The other persons insurance should pay to fix it, IF they hit you. Now IF you were at fault, then it's another story. You probably could buy the car back after they total it, but that's up to you. But I'd make them fix it.

But, from your pics, I'd try and pull it out myself first (after I got a check Wink ). If you have a friend with a pick up truck, or some other heavy vehicle, it would make it easier. I'd unbolt the rear bumper, and make up a couple of brackets to attach a chain, or cable to to use for pulling with. A couple of good yanks with the Square parked, and the heavy vehicle moving should get most of it right out. Then it would just be a matter of working the pinch points in the rear fenders, and anything else that still needed to be relieved to allow it to move back where it was. Paint the bare metal that's now exposed, and put it back together.

Bobnotch, the other guy's insurance is picking up the tab. He rear ended me while I was sitting at a stop light. I have been to four body shops and only one would even look at it. Two said they don't do work on vehicles like mine and one said he wouldn't know where to start as far as putting together an estimate. Two of the shops told me that the insurance is probably just going to total it becuase it's going to cost more to fix than it's worth.

I like your idea for straightening it. If the insurance is going to cut me a check and I buy the vehicle back for the salvage price I should have some money to play with for fixing it. That's why I was considering using the parts from the other square. It has a lot of non-accident related pieces that I could use as well.

Thanks for your response.

Well, the insurance company cut me a check. I'm going to take Bobnotch's advice and attempt to straighten Bettie myself. Now I have some money to further the restoration effort. The engine is dependable but is in need of some fine tuning. I'm trying to figure out what to do first/next... any suggestions based on my pics? Bettie's my DD so I would like to make her mechanically sound as well as comfortable to ride in.

Where would you start?

Didn't have much time today to do anything major to Bettie. I did manage to get the dented bumper off. Any tips on removing the rear apron?

Damage be gone! This week my wife and I implemented Bobnotch's straightening idea... and it worked like a champ! here is a link to some pics of the process and a video of our first attempt (we altered the technique after the video - switching vehicle positions and such).

That is cool how you fixed that. In case you ever do want to take it to a body shop, Cook's Auto Body (Auburn)is willing and able to work on our older cars
He's on CR 35. I have used him on my older Jeep and on my '70 Beetle
I also know one of the Old Fort Members has used the body shop up in Waterloo, not sure of the name but it is right off 8 about a mile before 427
