Sounds like you have full time power to the coil. heck your fuse box against the wiring diagram. It should only have power when the key is in the "on" position. I don't remember which fuse that's supposed to be right off hand. It'll probably be the same one that powers the wiper motor, but be plugged in on the top of the fuse holder.
Glad to hear you've got it running.

I've been chasing the wires with help of the diagram all evening. I'm pretty sure I have it right, but I'll definitely check again. Thanks, Bobnotch!

So, yeah a little catch-up time... The last time I posted an update was in February. I was struggling with a cylinder on our rebuild. Well, everything came to a screeching halt that week. My 15-year-old son and I had been in the garage all week trying to make a push on the engine. He started complaining about back pain. It got worse and worse and then, long story short, we were in the hospital finding out he had cancer, needed surgery and then chemo. Everything stopped on the car. We spent the next few months dealing with chemotherapy, etc. etc. BUT! Then there was some progress on the car. My son qualified for a Make-A-Wish and he wished for his car to be restored. The only way the MAW people could grant the wish was if the car was operational. We were a little pre-occupied to handle the heavy lifting of getting the engine rebuilt and re-installed. Thankfully, a member of our local VW club came to our rescue and offered to take our engine to his shop and finish the rebuild. Another member stepped up to help him. We joined when we could, mostly to learn and to help with the little stuff. When it was finished I was able to help install it. AMAZING DUDES!

Sadly, MAW couldn't grant the wish after all, per their legalities. My son has to make a different wish.

It turns out we were never going to get the cylinder seated. You can't put a round peg in an oblong hole. The engine had gotten so hot at some point that the case was distorted. It also turns out that we would have wasted all our time had we been able to move forward. The engine was pretty much seized up. It's a good thing we bought an engine from Mike Fisher. Other than that our new friend (with a lot more experience) complimented our work as far as the things that were in our control. Had we had been working with good parts, things would have gone a lot smoother. Here are some pics of the engine progress once the club got involved. It was a blast to work with a guy who knew his stuff and has ALL the tools to make life as easy as possible. Very Happy

He's doing better. The cancer is in remission and he's starting to regain strength. Hair is coming back in and all is looking well. Thanks for asking.

Still catchin' ya all up.... A quick video of the car firing up for the first time after the rebuilt engine was installed. My son still hasn't had a chance to learn to drive stick, so I had to pull it out and take it for a spin. We were both pretty stoked, though I think I showed it more. Very Happy

When we first started the resto the Squareback was mine and the kids were helping me on it. Since we re-bought the car it's become my son's project. He's starting to show his vision with the wheels.

He wanted to ditch the Riviera look (especially because of the gold accent) and go to the red steelies and original hubcaps with whitewalls look. Instead of forking over the coin for whitewalls or trying our luck with Portawalls, we decided to accomplish the general look by essentially painting a white beauty ring on the wheels.

But first, we had to get some steel wheels. We traded a buddy. My son even learned how to break down a tire.

But now we definitely have to do something about the ride height!

Wheels came out very well for a spray can paint job. 2-tone with cream outer looks good. After the sandblasting, did you use a primer/filler to even out some of the deeper rust pits? Are those 175/65 tires?

We did use a primer/filler to even out the deeper rust pits. We originally wanted 195/50 tires, but they wouldn't fit the wheel. We ended up going with 185/60s.

Looks good with that color combo. As for lowering, do a search of the forum, as it's been covered many times over the years. Just remember to reset the toe in after lowering the front as it does change. Nice work. Cool

Lower the front 2 inner splines. Have a jack under the lower ball joint when you remove/install the horizontal bolt so you don't ruin the thread! A $5 Magnetic Angle Gauge from Harbor Freight will ensure you have both sides the same. Lowering the rear 1 inner spline is optional according to your tastes.

Thanks for your wisdom.

We're installing a new turn signal switch and then the next step is bearings and brakes. Time to start sourcing parts. Any tips or suggestions from the community? Staying stock, nothing fancy, just new and dependable. I want my son to be able to use the Bentley to its fullest advantage when he does maintenance.
