Ha Ha Ha, you'd probably cut the roof of and make it like your avatar. Wink It does need some TLC though.

I had some time to work on the dent on the right side today. Here's some befores, as I wanted to be able to see the difference.

And here are a couple in betweens.

And these are after about an hour and a half.

Note, right now the dent is an "outee", rather than an "inee", so I've still got some more playing to do, as it's mostly out, and needs to be more flat thru the middle. At least the shape is closer, and I might not have to cut that part of the quarter off and swap it with the one that came with the car. I've still got to adjust the center of the quarter, and the other couple of smaller dents in the rear portion, but I'm thinking that when the engine is out, that'll be the time to work those smaller ones, as I can't reach in there to well with the load floor in place.
I did get the old seat tracks trimmed down, so they're ready for sandblasting. We'll see what's left of them after blasting. They do look like they're mirror image parts, so that'll be a help when it comes to rebuilding them.
I also got the inside of the car cleaned out. The rear seat is now upstairs in my shed. I've already talked to a buddy of mine about rebuilding the seat back, since he works with wood. He told me no problem. Very Happy At least now the rust thru is visible back there, and I can start working on a plan of attack.
I'd have loaded the pics I took, but the Samba Gallery seems busy today, and it took forever to get those I loaded up. Rolling Eyes

I must have found a quiet spot / time for loading pics, as they loaded just fine this time around. Here's the pic of the inside cleaned out.

Here's the rust under the rear seat.

And the trimmed seat rails, sitting in the rear with some of the stuff I moved from the front.

I realise you can't really see how rusty they are, but they are. At least the rusty floor they were attached to is now missing. Very Happy

Hey Bobnotch, I met your son at type 3 invasion in Ipsylanti MI, I saw his custom notch convert and some of your notches. Anyway I have a fairly unmolested type 34 1965, no spare parts, but I know where everything goes if you want some pics or some information. My t 34 is on the road with original motor and trans. My car sat so high in the front that I lowered the front one inner spline to level it. I also have the welded piece blocking the trailing arm from coming out. I put a large adjustable wrench on it and adjusted it a little which worked well.

I'll keep that in mind, as it does seem a little high at this time. Right now I'm not too worried about it, as I can use the ground clearance, but later on I'll probably do something about it. I'm also going to check the bushing thickness so I know how much caster it has, or if it needs a thicker bushing in the bottom (something VW did to the later cars to add caster). This car is an original 41600 mile car, so I expect it to be pretty much OE as far as the drivetrain and suspension go. I did get the OE engine for it from Russ, so it is a numbers matching car. Unfortunately, the interior got trashed pretty good from sitting in a field with the doors open since 1968.
I could use some pics of what the rear behind the seat area is supposed to look like, as I haven't really looked at the blue Bentley much on that area. Right now I'm still playing with the side dent, and then I'll probably go back to working on the front clip bondo, so I can get those areas sealed in DP. Then I'll work on the rear seat rust, and maybe get the seat tracks in.
If this was a 4 lug car, I'd have sent the master cylinder to Jim Adney for rebuilding, as the 4 lug cars are easier to deal with (at least for me, as I'm a 4 lug thug Wink). With this one being a 5 lug car, I'll wait until after the MI Vintage Festival (next sunday the 23rd), as I might pick up some parts there that I can use. Well that, and I've been trying to get the 71 Notch ready for the 2010 Invasion next month. Fortunately it's basically ready to go, other than the lower trim is still off (need to sand blast and DP the clips, then it can go back on).

By the way, Rob's car was actually a Squareback. Shocked We converted to a topless Roadster, and then added the trunk lid from a Notch, since we didn't get the roof or pillars. We built the entire rear half of that car, including the load floor. It started out as a front clip, and a bare floor pan, and we built everything up from there, mostly out of my pile of spare type 3 parts. The doors and rear fenders were from the same car as the front clip, they were pretty clean (fairly rust free). His grandfather brought him some parts as well, from looking in the junkyards of Texas, to help him out too. He tried to keep it as OE as possible though, as he had a vision of what he wanted it to look like when we were building it. John J gave him the upper portion of the windshield frame too, and we used some electrical cabinets for floor pans. It was an interesting build though. Twisted Evil

I had some free time sunday afternoon (after cutting the grass), and really got to looking at the dent from all sides. I found that part of it was held in place because of the amount of force of the impact caused it to go into the inner fender well (at the front of it). Since you can't just unbolt the fender (like a regular t-3) I had to cut out the "crash" damage to see more of the impact. Here's a couple of shots of what I mean. That wrinkle in the back isn't supposed to be there in the 1st pic. Nor are the others in the front of that view.

I also straightened part of it in the 2nd shot above, so it will help with getting the new inner portion to fit better.
This one is of the outer door jam. Notice that it's also pushed back. That was also working against me. I ended up pushing it forward a few mm's, mostly in the center.

Here's a couple after I got most of it welded back on. I still have to grind it down, and finish welding, but it's pretty close now. It was pretty easy to install that section, and I also see why Russ picked it up now, as it fixed a lot of the problems in that area. Sue came out and started playing again as well. Wink

She felt that "Wolfie" needed a "bath", granted it was more of a sponge bath, but it did get most of the "industrial" dirt and grime off.

It's looking much better now, and pretty soon I'll go back to working on the front clip section. I've just gotta finish this part up first, then seal it in DP (probably in the next couple of days).

No, it won't be going to this years Invasion, but maybe 2012 IF I get it back together in time. I'm taking Krunchy to the 2010 Invasion, since it's almost ready. I still have to reinstall the lower trim pieces, and wash it, and then load it up. Cool

Yeah, I saw that on the weather channel. It's heading for us, supposedly getting here friday afternoon (just in time for the weekend Evil or Very Mad ). No problem though, when you get a chance, as I know you're pretty busy.

Well, I got to do a little more to it over the last couple of days. Last night I got the rest of the welding pretty much done on theat side (looks like I need to work on the tail light edge now). I had most of the rear fender sanded back down to bare metal. Tonite, I finished sanding the rear fender, popped the metal around both tailights (along with removing some more of Russ's HF moving pad). While I was doing that, Sue finished the the right front fender, and got 1/2 of the hood sanded. Here's some pics.

Chris (my daughter) said you almost can't tell the rear fender was worked on, other than part of the weld seam (at a dent). Sue and I laughed at that one, but then I did fit it so I wouldn't have to use a lot of filler (the previous body guy used more than enough in the front clip). And since we're supposed to get some rain, I figured I'd seal all the bare metal up, so I epoxy primed it (used PPG's DP series). Here are those shots.

It's looking better already. Now IF I can get the front (both sides and the middle) close to that, I'll be in good shape. Cool These car definitely have some cool body lines.
Yes Tram, Sue has some long hair. I like it myself. Very Happy

Hey Bob: Forget the body filler. Check this lead- free body solder out:

http://www.eastwood.com/ew-basic-lead-free-body-so...nt_id=2108

I just got done filling in the welding dents on the rear quarter panel of a 1970 Mercedes 280SL with this. All I can say is WOW. Shocked No more plastic filler for me, EVER. It's sandable like filler (because it's lead- free). Even though the newer polyester filler stuff is nice, there's nothing like real metal. Very Happy

Check out the video in the middle of the page. That's just how it works.

Yeah, I've been thinking about using that stuff for years, but I've never had the time to play with it. After having to remove the "real" stuff, just so I could do some welding, it's really a PIA to deal with some times too. On these cars, they used it where ever the body panels were joined, at least according to the Blue Bentley.

Yes, same with the Mercedes. I just used a cold chisel to cut thru the original and peel it up.

Bob... needless to say i am already super impressed with the progress you have made! If you are looking for some donor metal for the area under and behind the rear seat i could very well have just what you are looking for. Shipping maybe a little bit of an issue but I can find a box to fit it and I will let you have it for cheap. No worries about harming another car, its from a car that was hit very hard in the rear. I just saved the rear section because it wasn't too rusty. If my seat rails that i have in my car aren't in horrible shape... I have spare pair i can send you pics of. If they are in desireable shape then we can work out a deal.

Your attacking this project head on is something else! It makes me less intimidated to get going on mine... Its ONLY metal right!? Twisted Evil

Yeah, I'm looking for donor metal, but I'm not scared to fabricate that piece either (I have some sheet stock here to make that piece if needed). If you want to cut that section out, let me know, and I'll tell you how much I need of it. That could keep me in the 1500 club. Wink Right now, I'm looking at going from just above the lower "shelf", and from inner wheel well to inner wheel well.
Yes, definitely let me know on the seat tracks, as I haven't blasted them yet, but they are on the list of things to blast. Right now I'm more interested in the body structure of the car, and seat rails are part of the chassis.

Yes, it's ONLY metal, and that's the way I look at it. Some parts are a little hard(er) to find, but then living in the "rust belt", this is nothing new to me. I see 4 or 5 year old vehicles with more rust. Shocked But yeah, I'm just attacking the metal portion at this time. The car really hasn't seen much work done to it, and I can't have it tying up garage space in my shop. I do have one of those portable HF garages, that it'll find it's way into before winter, possibly even this summer or fall depending on how busy I get this summer. That's why it's mainly getting sealed, to slow the rust.
