VeeRoom: I may be dense but where's the idle jet on a 34pict3... if it's not the pilot jet?

Would love to see that German blowup you referred to... the Bentley blowup doesn't show it.

Most carb problems are really ignition problems in my experience.

Check dwell, scatter, advancement, and the general match to your carb. Cheap distributors are just that, and some have the totally wrong vacuum signal when dealing with vacuum advance carbs.

Not sure if he's referring to the diagrams I cobbled up but here goes:

The idle circuit on all of the PICT-3 and PICT-4 carburetors were essentially split into two pathways for more precise control of idle mixture for emissions. There is an idle fuel jet ("pilot") jet on the side of the carb but it's only half of the story. There is an additional circuit down inside the works that provides the other half. VW called this the additional or "auxiliary" fuel jet (some people like to MISTAKENLY call this the "power" jet but it has NOTHING to do with "power" as it's part of the idle circuit. The "power fuel system" high speed enrichment circuit is totally separate from this)

I took some of the images in the DVG (the company that actually made these) booklet and enhanced it a bit to illustrate the idle circuit:

and the slightly different but similar 30 and 31 PICT-3/4:

The so-called Power Fuel System, or high speed, full-throttle "Enrichment", are the outlet jets in the TOP half of the carburetor and connect directly to the bowl of the carb. Items 19 in this diagram:

I do not know how to fix this. All I can say is it all works fine for me with what I use, Firefox.

Andy,

Cannot overstate just how INFORMATIVE and ENLIGHTENING those carburetor schematics / explanations (which you provided above) are to me -- and probably many other folk on here as well. Thank you ever so much for all your efforts on that, sir!! Smile
