|
|
i have 2 excellent condition split clocks
one is dated 3/51 and made by VDO that i bought from john henry
smooth housing
the other is dated 8/52 and another manufacturer.
i cant make out the name at the bottom of the face
but looks like 6 letters starting possibly with a H or M
this clock came from sweden and has a wedding cake type housing
what other brands of clocks did VW use besides VDO and Keinzle?
which one would be more desireable?
they look identical except for the housing and the manufacturer logo. _________________ Jesus Saves

As fas as I know the clocks for the pod in original export splits (not switter) are branded VDO and the housing might be made by VDO,
but the movement inside is made by some German watch manufacturer.
The clock on the left side is 3/51 and the one on the right 8/51, the one behind is made in 52, but it is similar to the 8/51.
I think the movement manufacurer or model changed during summer -51 and VDO had to change the model of the housing, from inside of the car they look similar.
I remember reading about this topic somewhere, maybe here? that the model changed 4/51
The watchmaker didnt find any sign of the manufacturer for the movement in the newer clocks when he serviced them for me, but he told me it look like an old german movement.
This is what I have found out, I might be wrong and there might be other versions.

the back looks like the one on the bottom right
the face is identical to the VDO clock except for the brand marking at the bottom.
which one should i use in my july 52
im not so worried about date stamp being correct.
the Mauthe clock keeps perfect time for a week
i havent personally checked the vdo clock but john henry said its good.
they are both in restored pods and both clocks are very nice and close to perfect.
the VDO clock has a small ding in the chrome ring but otherwise perfect _________________ Jesus Saves

Bet at least one of them if not both came from a Becker Monza radio. Willy Wilkes told me years ago that these radios only came with these rare Mauthe clocks. Every original radio I've restored has only had a Mauthe as well. |
