Looks exactly like the sailboat we had in my family ... an O'Day 20'. Loved the extra long cockpit - plenty of room for 4-6 people on a relatively calm day. However, sailing on the SF Bay is never, ever calm! We usually kept the crew to 4 max to be safe. The retractable keel is fun to have as well...especially if you hit a hidden sand bar! _________________ 89 Westy

There is a picture in here someplace of a Vanagon pulling a flat bed tow truck carrying another Vanagon and it was real. Funny _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

We'd been looking at a trailer for a while, something to get all the camping stuff in one place and not stuff everything in and on the westy, but couldn't find anything that we really liked, so we went to the drawing board (aka autocad) and heavily modified some plans from the teardrop forums.
We weighed it on our last camping trip at 500lbs, which is about where it will stay, not much else to put in. Empty is 280lbs on the axle, very little on the tongue, maybe 20.
now, lessee if I can get the pics to work (just read the how-to):

Watch out, now. Bus pilot high jacking the thread. Sorry. We don't have cool threads like this over there.
Home built 4 x 8. GTW is ~425# Another 500# of cargo puts me hovering around 1K. The Bus can handle the 1K well. Above that is taxing. _________________ Peace, Regis |

suhweet!
But you need a pair of the Vanagon alloys on that trailer to match the bus. _________________ -89 GL Westy, SVX.. finally.

I do have that in mind. I purposely wanted the five lug hubs. I may adapt whatever VW rim I can and use a hub cap at least. They almost fit the trailer rims as it is. Other teardrop builders have used Bug fenders. This first build is strictly for cargo. I can fill it to capacity. It now has an 1 1/4" receiver for a bike rack on the rear.
Next build will be 5 x 9 Benroy replica.

Ha! I LOVE the minibike. Looks likes a great way to carry it, what is the bike sitting in? I have something similar....a Yamaha QT50, not known for speed, but still fun to tinker with and cruise around the campgrounds, etc...
In trying to avoid a front bumper mount I've been looking for the best way to carry er' along without having to take the top off of my trailer...maybe something mounted on the trailer tongue like a beefed up motorcycle tray? Its light enough to lift like a bike, but too heavy for a bike carrier. Maybe whats used in the picture could work, depending on the dimensions.

Here is the 40"x48" trailer I bought to pull behind either of my Westfalia's. It is made of metal, but very light. I have a hitch for my Bay, now I need to get one for the Vanagon.
Lot's of room!

Liking all the sailboats.
Here is my 20 ft ranger which weighs around 2000lbs
sometimes I tow other boats
Or the occasional redneck toy.
I have never found the stopping to be a real problem, but than again I have never had an emergency. Keep lots of room in front of me with fingers crossed I guess. |
