Today is my last day in Maui visiting an old family friend. First time here. Now that I know what to expect a camper van would be great here. There is a lot of beach to camp on just down the road. I'd rather give a vw nut 100$ day to use their van than some hotel/motel. Searched the Hawaiian member list but none listed their location. Any Maui members interested for next time I visit? |

There is a company that rents westys in Maui. A friend has done it. The vans are not pearls but work fine. A bit tough to find places to camp aside from a few gems. Believe the topic has been covered here before. I've rented westys on the big island on several occasions and would so it again. Again vans are weathered but that's what I want for cruising around the island anyways.
You may want to check craigs list. When I did so awhile back there was a guy renting a weekender on Maui.

I'm planning on moving to Maui summer of 2015. You better bet I'm bringing my Weekender!!! It's the "do everything van"… camp, surf, haul kids, groceries, whatever! Check out www.alohacampers.com for rentals. _________________ 1990 Multivan - "Ohana"

Nice move, I love Maui. However, I'm not sure I would do an engine conversion before moving there, I think you were considering some options. The pace in the island is so relaxed. No rush to go anywhere. _________________ 1991 Westy auto w/ Peloquin TBD

My westy sports a "Maui on my mind" license plate surround
My best and oldest friends are locals there
Plus I play my ukulele everyday....
Does that count?
Plus the only music in the westy is Hawaiian |

Contrary to popular belief... conversions aren't just about more power. Reliability is what I'm after and more power is just a bonus. Especially on Maui where there aren't many Vanagon mechanics. Plus, I have to be realistic... most people who move to Hawaii stay less than 5 years. If that turns out to be my fate (or I want to ship the Westy back to tour the Mainland with my kids) I'll have a nice reliable (and more powerful ) engine to do it with. _________________ 1990 Multivan - "Ohana"

Cool thanks. I saw a bunch of camping areas. If I go back I'll definitely rent a van. A beater would be just fine. |

Aloha,
Ever wonder what the weather is like on Maui? Now you can sit at your desk and watch the waves roll in or the wind/kite surfers doing there thing live.

Ron… We don't remotely "hate you because you drive a Eurovan"… we are simply overwhelmingly jealous that you've lived on Maui for 30 years!!! _________________ 1990 Multivan - "Ohana"

A diesel conversion makes the most sense for a Maui van.
I have sold two Syncros that have relocated to the islands. |
