So I picked up this weird tailpipe at a swap recently, mostly as a curiosity. It appears to be new, and is painted just like a factory part. It seems like it is sized perfectly to convert the tailpipe to a right-side exit, but the question I have is, why? What purpose would that serve?

Probably an industrial engine application.

Mink

You are confused. It is not so you can run the exhaust to the other side of the Bus. It is supposed to go straight up for an amphibious Bus. Cool

Actually if I had to guess I would say it is a conversion piece for a Bug single tip muffler to be used on a Bus application. Since Bug single tip exhaust has the port on the opposite side of the muffler can.

That looks like a tailpipe for a South African 1600 baywindow bus. The silencer for that tailpipe has the single exit on the righthand side, with the tailpipe still exiting left.

I've never worked out why they changed from the left outlet/short tailpipe to the right outlet/long tailpipe.

If anyone's interested, I can take pics of this set-up on some of my buses.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't beetle single tip exhausts and bus single tip exhausts essentially the same except for the tip? That would make both of them (36HP era) exit on the right side of the can. Once the bus got the left side exit, beetles had two exits, aka peashooters.

I was always told that was an RHD silencer. Muffler is same, but with tab on other side. Put that in, and exit is on drivers side (RHD).

It's new, NOS actually. Why? It was cheap. Purpose? Increase your post count! Smile

This seems the most likely if there were countries with those standards. It would keep it from hitting the curb while backing or citizen sidewalk comfort.
