With the Bostig installation complete, it was time to put it to the test. A Father/Daughter road trip to Upstate NY was in order to do some camping and spend time with the grandparents...
Time to hit the road!
1200 trouble free miles later we arrived at Treman State Park in Ithaca, New York. Time to explore and base camp set.
Stopped in at Niagara Falls and took the Maid of the Mist boat ride. Cool way to see the falls...
Of course when in Ithaca, you have to stop and grab a pic at the Taughannock Falls Overlook
Might as well hit up an amusement park as well for a little adrenaline fix
Treman State Park really is one of my all time favorite places. I spent a good portion of my childhood in this park and it was cool to share it with my daughter...
Alas, it was time to leave...
But hey, why not one more waterfall...Ithaca Falls
Uneventful trip back, with a quick stop at Antique Archeology (American Pickers) for a photo op. We were too early, so they weren't open, but was fun to grab a couple pics.
Overall, a great trip. The little Ford Zetec purred the whole way. Over 2400 trouble free miles. Can't wait to put some more miles on this old girl as we rolled 230k on the way home. _________________ 1986 Vanagon Syncro Westfalia Weekender |

Overall the whole thing was pretty straight forward. Along with Bostig's instructions and YouTube videos, along with Samba members posts and blogs online, the first time I contacted Bostig was to request my tune for the first start. I took my time and all pretty much went according to plan. With only 100 miles under my belt so far, I am very pleased and look forward to many miles with this conversion. I have two months to break it in until heading half way across the country in August. _________________ 1986 Vanagon Syncro Westfalia Weekender |

No updates in a while, so it is time for a big one! As indicated previously, I was in for the RG5 group at Bostig. I just finished and am on the road as of last Friday. I really should have made this an ongoing log of my work, but life tends to get in the way.
So first things first, an engine was sourced. One of my best friends works for LKQ, so a 60k mile Zetec was delivered and promptly put on the hoist.
This old timer did my well, but it's time had come to a close in the Syncro
Getting ready to drop the 2.1
And she's out!
Transmission separated
Engine getting prepped and clutch installed
Engine cradle installed
Engine and transmission mated
Engine in!
Install almost done
First Run

Haven't updated this in forever!! Still have the Syncro, and am happy to say we are in the Bostig RG5
We also scored a cool clam shell trailer today. Have to work on the trailer lights, but otherwise it is pretty much ready to go! It's a 'Pak-E-Derm' trailer made by Ideal.

Finally got to enjoy the Westy as it was meant to be enjoyed. The family took off for a week in Minnesota. Over a 1,000 mile round trip, and made it safely home this time! Was disappointed that we did the whole Red Tek routine prior to leaving and about two hours into the trip looked back to see the dreaded drip of water and a nice wet back cushion Time to investigate the drain hoses I guess. Anyway, it was otherwise a great trip. Only saw one other Vanagon, a Country Homes camper parked at a hotel.
As the Mosquitos can be horrible in MN, we ended up buying a 'screen wall' attachment made for the 10 x 10 EZ Ups. With some small but strong clamps from Home Depot, it ended up fitting pretty well around the Fiamma F45, and for only around $50.

Made it out to the local Omaha VW show with the Vanagon for the first time in a couple years last month.
We won't first place in our 'class'...(out of 3 Vanagons). _________________ 1986 Vanagon Syncro Westfalia Weekender |

Congratulations on getting her done and so nicely to boot!
Enjoy, and watch out for those rural intersections from now on, especially in IA!
No offense to any Iowans, but when I lived in Omaha we had a joke about IA drivers during the Winter time. Sure that you know it? _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

Until you mentioned it I actually totally forgot about them. I kept both of them and now need to find what drawer I stashed them in! Will clean them up and put them back on. _________________ 1986 Vanagon Syncro Westfalia Weekender |

Truly an amazing reconstruction/restoration. Bravo to you for having the perseverance and determination to make this happen. If this doesn't show how much of a one of a kind and desirable vehicle Syncros are, I'm not sure what will.
On another note. Are you going to put back the Wolfsburg Edition badges?

Well, after 13 months it is back home in the driveway where it belongs. Drives great, nice and smooth and couldn't be happier. Mid Town Auto and Air Cooled Express in Omaha did a great job. Now to enjoy it again!
Same spot before we left for our trip last year...

The insulation is a closed cell foam type insulation, is self-adhesive, and all of the edges are taped via metallic tape that adheres to the body very well. I basically followed in the path of what quite a few others have done in regards to the 'hot foot' syndrome, and to reduce heat and noise to help assist the A/C.
