Good morning folks!

I've been wrenching on a few 1.9L engines lately on my vans. I swapped a complete engine with wiring harness from one bus to another and noticed quite a few differences I don't understand:

What is this valve thing? Some vans have 2, some have one, and some don't even have any?!

This wire was going to one of the 2 valve thingy, doesn't come from the junction box in the engine compartment. I swapped the whole engine with a one valve system and I didn't connect this wire, it's running fine but I wonder what it was for... Rolling Eyes

So far what I have noticed:

1.9L WBX, Bosch ECU 025906021 (metallic shell), no "valve" on an September '83 Westy, 4 speed and on an '84 Westy, Automatic. Both had Behr in-dash AC .

1.9L WBX, Bosch ECU 025906021 (metallic shell), 2 "valves" on an '85 GL (early 1985 model), 4 speed, over head AC (not the factory tunnel one, but the dealership added option)

1.9L WBX, Triump-Adler ECU 025906021C (plastic shell), 1 "valve" on a late 85' (built in Dec'84 though) Westy, 4 speed, no AC.

Those are your idle stablizer valves. One is for Vans fitted with air conditioning and the other for power steering. Some vans like mine which has A/C and power steering only has one, which is for my A/C (air conditioning). It is to increase your idle when your A/C clutch engages. If your power steering unit doesn't have an electrical connection, which mine doesn't, you only have one which is for A/C.

Thank you Westified!

It makes sense then, because the aftermarket Behr vans had none, and didn't have power steering either.

The early 85' had power steering and VW AC and had 2, that's a match too.

The late 85' had power steering and no AC and had 1, that's a match too Razz

Question answered perfectly! Thank you again!

Actually I take that back, it was too easy Laughing

The automatic 84 with no valve has power steering, and the 83 doesn't have power steering. Both have no valve and aftermarket AC. Weird.

Actually it does match. Mine is and 84 wolfsburg westy with factory AC and power steering. It has only one Idle Stablizer valve which is for the AC. The earlier vans you are working on with after market Behr AC apparently did not put in an Idle Stablizer Valve. Also, it appears the power steering didn't get and Idle Stablizer until later 1985. Many thought the dealer installed the AC but in 1984 the factory did. The AC relays are located in the dash by the A pillar on the drivers side above the fuse panel. I thought the 1983 were Air Cooled until 1983.5. I could be mistaken on this. Hope this helps.

Thank you Smile Yes, she's my sidekick, always with me wrenching and on adventures. She's good at rubbing and scratching her back on dirty oil pans under vans Laughing
