Hi Guys,
My throttle cable or accelerator cable (what is the correct term anyway?) has been sticky as of late. I think it is due to the cold weather/slushy/icy stuff going on. It was stuck like heck yesterday, and I couldn't drive it. Basically I would push the gas pedal, and the pedal would not return. I checked the likage at the throttle body, cleaned/lubed it and problem remained.
Today I went out to check it out in daylight/warm weather and everything is fine.
I think I've either got ice on the cable somewhere or the cable is failing...fraying etc.
I figure I should have a spare cable just in case -- but am not sure the correct one to get.
I've got an '86 Syncro with a Subaru 2.2 engine.
If I'm not mistaken - it looks like a previous owner may have put the Burley 2.2 Throttle conversion kit on there - https://burleymotorsports.net/product/subaru-2-2-throttle-conversion-kit/
Also - any tips for keeping the cable dry...I think this is my 3rd winter with my syncro, but first year I've had a problem like this. _________________ -Kevin

The Burley kit uses the stock VW cable. If it's original, probably a good idea ro replace it. _________________ '84 Westy, '93 Subaru ej22 and Subarugears 5speed

When the throttle is sticky can you manually close it at the throttle body? If so that is definitely a throttle cable issue.
You need a stock vanagon cable as stated, that is a BMS throttle reverse kit attached to it.
The cables like to fray in the housing at the rear for some reason. |

It's been a long time since I have dealt with this, but the throttle cable/cable guide is exposed under the body and susceptible to icing. On mine the ice would pull the guide tubing away from the one cross member causing a near full throttle condition. IIRC, I added clamps to keep the guide in place. This same junction would probably let water in that would freeze the cable to the guide keeping the cable from functioning at all. |
