$400 bucks is a fair price.--

I just picked up a clean 89 Carat with a smoked clutch for $350.00.

The only thing you need is the gonads to offer the right price.

Here's the story--and I am at an unfair advantage here in the Midwest.

VW & Vanagons didn't even make it out of the starting gate here.
They failed miserably in sales, and nobody wants them.
I don't think anybody even knows what they are.

I've bought nice Wolfsburg's here out of dealer's lots for 3-400 dollars and I drove them to the shop--
The dealer's were glad to get rid of them because they just don't move.

And because of the rarity of them , they are far and few in between.
I mean--Maybe I see 2-3 Vanagons here in a years time--other than my own.

Fair? Who said anything about fair? Have cash in your pocket and low-ball the seller like you're a son-of-a-bitch. If he does call you a son-of-a-bitch, all that means is you're a bit too low.

The man's nuts--Grab Em'.

Ticket to buying anything is say nothing, hum to yourself as you walk around a vehicle, shake your head in disgust, take a note pad & write a letter to your girlfriend if you want as your scoping it out--the seller won't know what in the heck your doing--then lower the boom.

Low ball the hell outa him right from the get go--
Insults are the key to a good buying strategy--

Make sure you have his phone number, and call him twice a week, and lower your offer each time you talk to him.

If it's still there in 3 weeks you've got him.

Take a ride back over to the Van with cash in hand, and he'll be ready to take just about whatever cash you have in your hand--

And as you wave goodbye--he'll thank you for the opportunity to sell you the vehicle.

Works every time.

Dealer's are really easy.
If the vehicle has had too many bithdays sitting on the lot they'll almost kiss you to take it off of their hands--rather than have to wholesale it or auction it off--which is a big loser.

300 less than Van Again, or Ken Wilfry's overpriced core.

And an engineering marvel in updated front heater cores & a chance for you to experience a bargain at that.

Uncomparibly Priceless.

And may I add, the same price as the Van-Cafe'

What's the problem with that?

You should know better than asking that crazy question.

What else do a have?

Let her fly--

Whats parts got to do with skillfully manipulating, and controling a sale of a vehicle anyway?

Or should I say; tactfully controling the sales process.

Either you have the skill--or you don't--that's all there is to it--the bottom line.

Sitting for 7 years with no movement or engine turned over will surely present some issues............like mice.
Bet it smells really nice inside.

Lately, I have been given vans in better condition.

Better get more pictures of the rusted side that is not shown in the auction before settling on a price.

If you are looking to keep the price down...I would not inform the entire VW community that it is available. I'm sure someone out there is willing to pay more than you for it.

The only downfall of buying anything on E-Bay--especially a vehicle that's been sitting for 7 years is there may be a few unpleasant suprises , not mentioned or pitured on the ad---

The price is still plenty cheap, if you needing parts this would be a sweetheart--if your looking for a driver, I don't think this would be the ride to be bidding on.

Unless your looking for a project--something to consume some of your time & money.

They're about a mile from My Uncles restaurant in Meredith. Really all I want this for is the Zbed. It's worth $400 just for that and the door panels etc to me....never mind the spares I can pull and sell etc.

I've had people do some or all of the things above to me when I was selling a car or other items.

I just tell them to stop calling and that their behavior has ensured that I will donate it rather than sell to an obnoxious low-baller.

This shows two things;

(A) you were just screwing around when you published it for sale

(B) You have a bone headed mentality.

And I know a guy just like ths.
His motto is;
"I'll let it rot into the ground before I sell it for that"

And guess what--he's got a bunch of rotten vehicles that have turned into dust, and ain't worth a salvage price.

Smart thinking.

At the end of the day it's worth what someone will pay. You don't ever start an Auction at $.99 and hope for $4k.

I have a relative who is exactly like you post.

He has a '93 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It failed inspection 2 years ago for brakes. It just sits in front of his garage. Now there is an issue with the transfercase he never mentioned. At first it was "I think it has a bad CV..."
I used to build Rovers, jeeps and Cruisers into back country expedition rigs. Every 4 months he calls.

Him: "uh, hey, what do you think I could get for the ZJ?"

Me: How many miles and did you fix the Tcase yet?

"...uh, well about 260k, but she runs real strong...and the Tcase is still messed yup..I think it's just the viscous coupling..."

"well replacing just the VC is about 24 times the work of just swapping the TC....if the VC went the rest isn't far behind...$800 on a good day..."

"PFFFFFT! HA! I'll Keep it for under $2k....I mean Dude, it's an Orvis..."

"yeah, you're right, a broken '93 ZJ with 260k is worth more...enjoy your yard ornament...." Laughing

fixed your post

I also am willing to pay somebody a fair price when i buy something, rather than repeatedly harassing them with low ball offers.

YMMV.

To play Devil's Advocate here...What is a low ball offer on the Vanagon in the Ebay here?

165k, non running, bad coolant pipes, frozen brakes, rust and damage to the body?

One is better shape just went for $600 near me (barely running, but running). One with a NH State inspection, with less mileage, new O2 and and just a few rust spots just Changed hands in Kittery, about 10 minutes south of me for $1800.

There Seems to be two three tips to the Vanagon world (not including the $35k Go Westy Dream machines LOL0

Beat on, barely maintained Vanagons Waiting for a rescue that go around $1k-$2k all day long, then the well preserved and intelligently modified examples that sit over $5k. And then the parts rigs.

I'm not sure what you see as a daily driver in your area, but in my not so humble opinion, this unit is a Parts rig.
