why would it be opposite? is reverse down to the right on RHD cars? no...if the shift pattern is the same, same trans and all, it would most likely be the same design.
but then again, thats just a guess. _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

I must be wrong in thinking that if this was a right hand drive bus the stop plate and everything else is turned in the other direction. Im not from across the pond so im just guessing. You need the reverse lookout to catch and I was thinking if the stop plate setup for a left hand drive you will not engage the lookout properly. I could be totally wrong here...
LHD reverse down and to the left
RHD reverse down and to the right _________________ Special Thanks to:

The owners manuals from RHD and LHD countries all show the same shift pattern. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

I've been wrong before. But think about it... Why would the stop plate go in the say way on a RHD as it does on a Left hand drive. It's ment to keep you from going in reverse gear when looking for second. If you keep the stop plate the same as a LHD bus on your RHD bus your stop plate becomes useless.
Please someone tell me I'm wrong?? _________________ Special Thanks to:

My mistake then. So RHD reverse is down and to the left? _________________ Special Thanks to:

Yes, to alter it would require more than just a stop plate flip, RHD would require a whole new transmission. RHD shifts exactly the same as LHD but you use the other hand. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Just found this thread, as I am getting into shifter stop plate adjustment.
I can confirm that RHD buses have the same shift pattern and mechanism that LHD buses do. I have a 1978 RHD double cab, with a Gene Berg shifter, and if you sat in the passenger's seat (on the left) you would shift exactly the same as you do for a LHD bus.
I will say that it is a bit odd to be shifting with your left hand.
FWIW, the pedals are also laid out the same. That is, the left foot handles the clutch, and the right foot handles accelerator and brake. If they had reversed that, I would have to completely retrain myself. _________________ John

I would also like to ask for clarification on the actual shifter on RHD buses. My OG LHD shifter has a slight rotation to it, allowing all 4 forward gears to be slightly moved towards the driver. Aftermarket stock style shifters do not have this slight rotation, so 3 and 4 are closer to the passenger than driver on LHD buses. Do RHD buses utilize a shifter that gives a slight right bias? Because if they used the stock LHD shifter, the pattern would not be close enough to get the Volkswagen factory ergonomic sign-off.....

Whoops. Didn't think to check there. Good to know the aftermarket stock shifter will suck equally on cars all over the world.

might as well post an update to my part while it is active again. Hoody found me a new pipebowl and shift lever in Europe. That plus the new stop plate and cover made it work completely normal. The shifter stays down when it is in reverse. With rebuilding the transmission last year the shifter feels solid and no slop at all in it.
Prior to that Ken Madsen sent me a used pipe bowl, shifter and cover - the best he had and that improved things greatly but the new ones are like the bus was when it came from the factory. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |
