Hi Jo.R,
Yes, I have seen those pretty often on ebay. I have seen like your yellow and a blue one (the wheels are whit on this one). I think that tonka was calling those ''the mini series''.
You have a great exemple there. _________________ Stephane Blanchet-Cote

Hi all,
It's been a long time so here are the new addition:
Finally got a yellow one. We just see them less often.
This one are rare find. This one are purple color. I saw one on a web site a long time ago from a guy who work at VW dealer an he received it a long time from the dealer. I don't know anything else from this one. It doesn't look like to be repaint. It look like original. Any info???
Here are some exemple of the license plate from tonka USA and Canada. There are some difference:
Also, some difference from the canadian ans USA teal version, not the same color at all:
And the green version of the pimp bug have changed too. I have seen the same color change in the jeep wagonneer too:
I fund too this version of the orange bug. Great flower seen also on the buggy (same sticker):
I add some tote too and a great display for them. Even the kids like to put the helmet:
Here are two blue version of the tote bug that I have seen on the web but I can't find any to put in my collection:
This light blue one even sold to 123$ on ebay. Prototype? one of? I don't know?:
Any other information or detail are welcome.
Thanks. _________________ Stephane Blanchet-Cote

Love your Tonka collection! Never knew they came in so many versions and colours. I received the Sidewinder for Christmas around 1974 and still have it around somewhere.. Would love to get my hands on one of those early teal versions, close to my real '62 Beetle! _________________ 1974 "Restfalia" Camper 2000 cc EFI 2001-

I wish someone would reproduce the bumpers for the large Beetles. So many for sale with damaged bumpers, but otherwise decent! _________________ 1974 "Restfalia" Camper 2000 cc EFI 2001-

HI all!! I'm a newbie here. Saw all your neat collections of tonka VW bugs and thought I'd share my customs I made a little while back. No harm were done to clean original bugs. These needed redone-(disclaimer for purists).lol. I since added a luggage rack to the green one.
I disassembled, stripped and painted each part separately, removed the factory wheels , drilled to lower and accommodate the new axle and wheels.
As to comment on the chrome bug from ach60, I'm pretty sure that was factory made and may be one of the ones given exclusively to Tonka workers or their vendors/contractors.
Any Tonka's made in Canada or New Zealand are desirable to Tonka collectors. |

Whatever it was, it gives me an idea for some of my steel toys. (I have an extra Buddy L bus kicking around ...)
It's funny how you mention purists. I never thought of toy collectors as purists, but I suppose some of us are! _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

This chrome tonka look really great. Sure I will send one to be chrome the next time I will have part to be chrome on my car.
I could be great ot send some photo of your tonka collection. I always like to see any difference beetween yours and mine. From what I see, Tonka in the 60's and 70's really like to change part in the production.
Thanks again for your input. _________________ Stephane Blanchet-Cote

Hi all,
Two great addition to the tonka collection. First, an original tonka canada box. We don't see them offen. IT append that I find the box of my teal tonka who look like never been played with:
Really proud of this find.
The second is also a tonka canada exemple but it's the first time that I see one with this license plate sticker. Generaly, tonka canada one have the ovale sticker but this one have the silver and rectangle license plate. I suppose, depending of the year, they changed the sticker.
Ok, the sticker doesn't look good but it's the first time I see one like this.
Soon, I will look to reproduce some of those tonka VW sticker to help me restore some in my collection.
Thanks to read and add your feedback. _________________ Stephane Blanchet-Cote

Hi all,
It's been a long time so i will put some new stuff that I fund on ebay in the last years:
First of all, here are some original boxes that been sold:
These are the first generation:
And then, the second generation:
And then, I've seen this one:
I don't know alot about this one. Look really simple and old. First from the first? Exportation? You tell me?
And then, third generation:
And finally, the last generation:
And even a JC Penney in his original box:
The canadian version was a little bit different:
But the new zealand version was the same as the american version exept on the side:
Right now, I'm thinking reproducing those box because they add so much too all those loose imaculate tonka out there.
And now, about the vw tote version:
I fund that the light blue version was an export version they sold in Europe:
It was sold in little box like this one (italian version):
In USA, it was sold on card like hotwheels:
And box set:
I've seen a white version some time for sale but I just fund out that this one was from a stunt team set:
So, keep your eyes open and put information when you have some. I really like those tonka VW.There are so many version available. _________________ Stephane Blanchet-Cote

I have enjoyed this thread a lot. Phanal's cool collection inspired me to get my hands on some vintage Tonka's as well. I have been trying to get decent examples of the earlier versions, and along the way have decided to have some fun with my poorer condition examples. I have so far repainted several in original VW colours and these can be seen on this site. I do have a question about one Tonka I received from a friend...
What version is this? Can't say that I have seen another like this on E-bay. It appears never to have been taken apart and has definitely not been repainted. Was this one of the Beetles to go with the large car carrier trucks??? Anyway been having fun collecting these vintage toys. Thanks phanal for all the pictures and information... _________________ 1974 "Restfalia" Camper 2000 cc EFI 2001-
