Last week, my transmission started making alot more noise than usual. I havent driven it much since then, as im doing lots of bodywork in preparation for new paint.
Im pretty much sure its the pinion bearing thats dying, i checked the CV's and theyre tight like a speedo.
With one wheel on the ground and the trans in gear, i can rotate the other wheel about 1" (as measured at the tread). Im assuming this is too much play?
I want everyone to give me their wild speculation as to when it'll finally fail. _________________ Clark

Well, if it is pinion related, I want another polling option.
I'll take over 5,000 miles. _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

You don't give a description of your noise, but a couple inches play in that area is quite normal.
The mainshaft bearing is what usually fails first on Vanagons, as this bearing is somewhat difficult for oil splash to lubricate. I won't reuse a mainshaft bearing that's been removed, even if it looks fine. |

Spider gears would be my guess. If the gears still shift, your problem may not be too bad. _________________ TP in the Pack (I am a cyclist)

Well, noise from the diff can go on forever. The play is indeed normal. Now if it starts making a 'R-rrr-R' noise, then that is the sound of money being ripped from your wallet. DIffs can moody when they go. For a good thermometer, look at the magnetic plug and see if you have a gear tooth or chunks there. Then you might be able to narrow it down a bit. Sometimes, if your lube is not too nasty, the brass will give the oil a bit of the metallic paint look.
Lacking big chunks or poltergeist tranny actions like popping out of gear. I would vote for over 5K as well. You can trust me, go on that 5K trip through Zombieland, your brains will be safe in your über reliable Van. _________________ Geology with a Syncro rocks!
