A liddle riddle ...
Is this a:
1. Medieval warship anchor found south of Stockholm?
2. Iron age harvest tooling?
3. German WWII anti air raid gun rescued from an Austrian lake?
No ...
The experts will surely know ...
It comes from BD remains dragged out of an old allotment site near Kiel Holtenau.
Pictures are before and after electrolytical de-rusting treatment.
Not much left but enough for a reconstruction. I will do that myself; so no need for me to buy green panels.
Does anybody know where to get the two screws from (new or used)?
*Edit*: The long nuts which are welded to the inner reinforcement plates have a length of 40 mm
Regards,
Jurgen

if this is the start of your build thread and that is what you have to work with I think we might have a winner for the greatest resurrection ever. |

Hi,
the bolts/screws for the front beam are sticking out. Before the vehicle was dumped in the nature loooooooong ago someone cut / sheared the bolt heads off, whacked off the steering rod with a torch and saved the front beam.
This must have been at a time when BD front beams were useful as other early buses were still around in daily use (must have happened between 1965 and 1975) so there was a real need for spares like for T3 buses nowadays.
Where can I order new bolts? Are they the same as on beetles?
If so, which length do I need?
Regards,
Jurgen |

I just read this info on samba .
bolts are 14x1,5, 100 mm long and tread 30 mm

I had to machine bolts from 16 s. Hard to find these spec .

Hi Veskovici,
thank you very much for your info!
Which hardness do the bolts have? 8.8 or 10.9?
Well ... this is what the steering box looks like after electrolytic de-rusting. I´ll just have to go over it with a wire brush and under the black layer the bare steel will appear. Very bad: The material loss on the spindle which makes it very tricky to re-enact this box again. Maybe I find a specialist who can repair it.
Regards,
Jurgen

Luckily I managed to separate the pedals from their shaft:
... and my water jet cut 15 mm patterns for the front chassis rails are also there so I can clamp 2 mm gauge steel between both and beat the whole shit into shape ... same patterns of 15 mm I will make for the inner strenghteners including all pressings (also for 2 mm steel instead of 1.25 as originally performed by VW!). Galvanized steel, and, of course, hot-dipped.
The front brake holder outrigger is also there as well as the material for the pedal assy / steering box holder:

... some more progress on the front main chassis rail metal forming project. Managed to cut out the 2 mm thick raw bows with additional material at the rims with an electric jigsaw ... *phooaaahh*
Hope I can get a bit further at the weekend.
But my mission is clear: Clamp the 2 mm steel between the 15 mm patterns and beat it into shape (which will cost much sweat and wild curses at this thickness). The stretching is easy; just hammer radially on the curves until they surrender against my brute force.
BUT the shrinking of such thick material ist a real nightmare if you have to work with primitive tools like I own. I´m confident to face this challenge upright and hope to get a satisfying result. When the bows are bent I will draw a line in 35 mm distance from the outer rail sides sides and grab the overlap with grip pliers bit by bit and bend around the necessary spot welding flange.
I do this always like that and have never needed a bench folder for such 10 mm flanges so far! Just draw a line, grab it and push it around 90 degrees - this works ALWAYS.
