Hi, which flame thrower to use for svda with pertronix ignition 1, is it 1.5 ohm or the 3.0 ohm? _________________ 74 super beetle

3 ohm is what you want.
the 1.5 is mainly for V8 apps I believe. |

I just purchased a Flame Thrower(1.5ohm) thru Amazon. Reading this I should have purchased the 3.0ohm version.
What concerns should I have? If it makes a difference I have an 009 with a pertronix ignition 1
Thanks |

Unless you are running an ignition box like a CDI, then with the Pertronix Ignitor 1 module you should be running at least a 3 ohm coil or you may burn out the Ignitor:

I feel a little stupid responding back to this question but I was under the impression that the MSD distributor was similar to the CB Magnaspark dizzys in that all I needed to do was to hook a coil straight to it.

Yep I’m going to have to rethink my next move as I get closer to getting my car back on the road. I can get a new ready to run MagnaSpark dizzy for a little more than the price of a used CDI box & sell my new MSD & use those dollars on a Blackbox. I will need to reread the 38 pages of JPaull “MSD dizzy tips & tricks” to determine which direction I go.
For what it’s worth the motor currently is a 2332 shortblock with an 86b with a set of NOS 48dells in my parts bin. Looking at purchasing possibly a set of CB Ultra Mag, MiniWedges, or WedgePorts and dial in a cr around 8.75-9.0 with plans to go carbureted blowthru turbo with a water/methane injection as needed dependent on boost.

I think it was the programmable(Digital) MagnaSpark that had issues and is no longer available on CBs website. Don’t remember exactly what the issue was but I actually have that version with the programming disc in my parts bin that I purchased many yrs ago used on samba b4 I read about some users having problems. I may give it a try.…..it has 4 preprogrammed ignition curves that can be set with internal toggle switches……2 for N/A and 2 for Turbo. I will have to go back thru those threads to see if the problems was with the users or the dizzy.
Here’s one in the classified now:
