my coolant tank in the passenger side rear is leaking a small amount of coolant, but only after a long drive and the engine is turned off. it takes about two minutes to start after the motor has been turned off. i first noticed it last week, and thought maybe letting the engine idle for a bit may circulate enough to cool it, but it still leaked. it does not leak when the engine is running. the coolant level is where it should be and i top off what little has leaked out but...? i can not seem to see exactly where it is coming from but it looks like its coming from the seam of the tank. what can cause this? the tank behind the license plate is also filled to its proper level.

Original VW expansion tanks develop a crack between the cap and the level sender.
It can also be a leaking sender.
If it's aftermarket, it's possible the horizontal seam is leaking.

It's also possible the pressure cap doesn't open correctly, building up excessive pressure causing it to leak.

Many causes.....

I dunno, they don't say the brand....

Some are very flimsy, I had one leaking recently from the seam...I think MTC or URO.

Febi used to be made in Germany, same ones as JP Group, great quality, but it seems like Febi dropped it. I'm sure JP group will come up with a new version that's gonna be crappy like almost everything they make...
It's becoming impossible to find a decent plastic tank these days. Meyle is holding up ok, but feels flimsy AF.
I just replaced one recently for a customer, just a year old, the inner seam glue was turning yellow and falling in chunks in the tank. Perfect to clog up your radiator....

I've personally seen a reasonably new Meyle tank burst about 13mm above the seam. I've subsequently installed a GW aluminum tank in this van.

Yeah it's all shit these days. It sucks bc not everybody is ready to drop the coin for an aluminum tank. We're getting priced out of these vans one way or another....

looks like the tanks that Brickwerks sells are made in Denmark.

Nothing is made in Denmark, it's like Meyle Germany, it's where they have their office. Anytime I see this on a website, I know it's JP Group Laughing

I have no experience with the 1.9 tank, if it's the same as the now obsolete 2.1L, they were made in Germany, which JP Group never said. I know it bc the Febi tank had a tag that says so, and it also had a tiny little bump on the seam left probably by a nick in the mold, which was the same as JP Group.
I find it funny they now supply Blau caps, they use to supply the crappiest caps, the threads were clocked the wrong way so you would end up with the nipple pointing dead into the chassis, towards the rear, with no possibility to connect the hose. They were copied after the black VW caps which had their flaws...
For once they seem to acknowledge there was an issue and corrected it, that's rare.

That yellow ish plastic seem very similar, don't worry too much, inspect it once in a while, especially when very hot see how soft it becomes. If you radiator has a good flow, you'll be ok.
