Fan shroud rattle...Doghouse, broken fin or????

Since my summer 09 trip back from a fantastic 2 1/2 weeks at the Oregon Coast when my departure day was 107 Fh, I developed a mildly annoying rattle, especially at idle.
Confirmed today that it appears to be in the back of the cooling shroud. I am certain I need to pursue the four bolt + harness + motor pull to diagnose... Evil or Very Mad
Any suggestions for other things to look at?

At first I thought it was an exhaust rattle, but, today, we confirmed that it appears to be the tin at the back of the cooling shroud.....

I have many extra parts to add if/when the imminent motor pull happens the next time, but, my 181 has been running just sweet and trouble free before this with beyond regular maintenance and love.
Thanks in advance for your kind replies Shocked

I've been able to pull the gen/alt without pulling the motor with the stock shroud, but it's not easy. Pulling the motor is the way to go.

Guesses:
- Loose bolt for the tin somewhere (doghouse exit?).
- Something sucked into the fan and is rattling against the shroud.
- Fan spinning loose on the shaft.

Before driving it much farther, I'd check to make sure the fan is secure and not causing this rattle. That could be catastrophic.

It could be your thermostat flaps as well.

Disconnect the fan belt first and fire it up to see if the sound goes away before going through all that work.

Will do, good idea!

We are 99% sure it is in the shroud as when you pull back on while revving the engine, the noise(much of it) goes away. The fan belt is a 2 minute check though and I will do that.

You could have something in the fan, with the engine OFF, reach in and see if a beer can, bird nest, mouse home or something is in the fan.

I had a fan crack around the mounting bolt, it could then wobble around.

You could have had a fin come loose or off of the fan and it would be rubbing.

Maybe something with the thermostat flaps.
