Just how rare are the VW 1500 tool kits? Gizmo Bob has one featured in the current Hot VW's. There is one for sale in the Samba classifieds (976570). Who else has one? _________________ '87 Porsche 911

I've had two. Both plastic cases liek the one on the ad. the only difference, one had a VW 1500 logo and the other a HAZET Tourist 2. Bob's is a generic, that covers both bug and type 3's. I have only seen in pics an early metal one offered for type 3's only. _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.

A metal one eh? Never heard of a T3 metal one.
Ive had all 3 types at one point. The 69 and later type as seen in the classifieds. Its all plastic with a raised VW and 1500 symbol. As well as the identicle except badging "Hazet 2" type. These are both rare and treasured prizes when found. They are kinda flimsy and get beat up. As seen in the add.
A couple years back I was offered a 62 tool box for a type 3. At the time I was like, what? How do you know its a 62? The owner was stationed in Germany and owned a 62 notch. He said he bought a T3 tool box for it. Sold the notch long ago but kept the box as he said it wasnt a cheap purchase in 62. Tis is what I got.
Its very different in that it has foam insert for the tools and thick plastic for the box. Not a thin liner with thin plastic. It is as far as I know the only compleet on and is the oldet know-unless another pops up-which has but it was only the box and I dont know where it went or who owns it.
Id say this is the rarest-followed by Bobs generic type-dont see many of those. And the last is the first shown. I sold the two on-Scott owns one-Lee has one and I know of 2 others. So thats what-6 plus the classy one for 7? There has to be more in peoples Hazet collections that dont care about there T3 origins. _________________

GEE! maybe I was wrong! HA HA! I thought it was metal, I have a pic of it on my manual, since it was shaped like a beetle one. Good to know!!! _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.

Ok-1966 brochure, see Bobs kit show up-notice how the description has a bug filled and a T3-used for both. EDIT:(oops not correct about the bug-T3 filled thing)
Enter 1969-now replaced in the brochure with a square one, but the description say-also available in a round kit. But it dosnt have the bug- T3 symbols in the description? But in the begining of the brochure you see the last pic I show-it has the generic round case
1970
And the clincher!

'69 and later? What's your source for that information?
And yes, I do have one -- mine is the one the seller links to from his ad. |
I could of swore Id seen it in one of the top ads. But I think it was that generic one. Its seems to be circa the square one as it has the same kind of tool catch construction. The square box plastic trays actualy look beefier. _________________

Something I noticed in those 2 tool kits. The large open end wrenches, are 27mm. I do not think that there is anything on a T-3 that is 27mm. The front wheel bearing nuts on the early ones are 24mm, and the flats on the spacer behind the generator pulley nut.
27mm is the spindle nuts on an early T-1. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

Just recently found this tool kit & though I would post pics & update this thread as these early kits are not seen very often.
The kit is in very nice condition & looks to be missing the small pliers. They should be easy to find. There also is a small slot between the 27 mm wrench & the transmission wrench. Does anyone know if anything goes there? Maybe a feeler guage?

Here is another update to this this thread. I found another unknown Tourist 2 tool kit & thought I would post pics next to my 1962 1500 tool kit.
