Should I spray on the first color and them put masking tape over it then spray the second color, followed by the clear coat ? or clear the first color before spraying on the second ?

pay att to your flash times,If you are an inexperienced painter
then I would recommend doing the top (of the car) color, then put one
coat of clear, let cure over night ,mask shoot lower color, demask and shoot clear on entire car

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I am inexperienced, painted only four cars in my life and the last one was over ten years ago. What I have is time so waiting for the first coat to dry first is not a problem. Would wait a day before masking the first coat OK or the safe bet is to clear the first coat first ? Playing it safe may lead to less work later for an inexperience guy like me ?

Are you talking about the 3M Scotch-Brite Light Duty Cleansing Pad ( P/N 7445 ) in white that you scuff the clear by hand ?

I am worried that if I don't clear the first color first and tape over it to spray the second color, the first color may come off when I remove the masking tape.

you can use a hardner in your bases, but you will have to
scuff if you miss your window

If you base the first color you should be able to mask on it within an hours time, then do your second color and unmask and clear the whole car at once. You wont peel up base unless its not prepped correctly in the first place. No need to scuff anything in between coats of base if you get to it all in one day.

stevey88, I did a 2 tone bc/cc as a rookie just a couple months ago. I didnt use the best paint you can buy but it was Limco Supreme and worked very well. They told me at the paint place i only had to wait 1 hour after painting first color. That is what I did and it worked perfect had one small spot that lifted. The one thing I didnt expect was the bottom color traveled up the cracks in the doors and came out at the top a little so tape up the door crack. I was a rookie also as this was my first paint job ever. It is not perfect but not to bad either. Chad

ok paint is wha i do for a living.
Each type of paint will have a different flash (dry) time before you can tape to it. If you get your prep work done properly you dont need to worry about the paint peeling up with the tape.
Now if you are going to paint the top then clear, I would recommend using a 800 grit wet sand the following day to allow for adhesion of the next coats of clear. as in
Cover thee bottom Base the top wait aprox 30 minutes then at least 2 good coats of clear on the top next day untape 800 grit wetsand the clear (removing any imperfections) then cover the top and base the bottom, wait aprox. 30 minutes untape then clear the entire vehicle. for the smoothest results without having to buff on the next day 800grit wetsand again removing any imperfections then mix some more clear, but this time add an extra 10% of the reducer. spray a nice evn coat (this should glass over almost instantly leaving an almost perfect finish). This is called flowcoating. good luck with the paint job if you need anymore advise dont hesitate to ask Im new to the site but ive been painting for 15+ years.
feel free to call if ya need to

Kit,
[quote=" next day untape 800 grit wet sand the clear (removing any imperfections) "/quote]

You mean leave the masking tape overnight after putting two coat of clear on the first base ?

didnt know how new you are to taping and painting. its easier to untape the next day not having to worry about the tape hitting the fresh clear and causing an imperfection in it that is harder to sand out. It wont hurt anything.
