All I hear is complaints about local shops or have personally seen shoddy work, My buddy takes his to Hans Meyer on University, I think it is called Hans Meyer Autowerkstatt, its about six blocks east of Fairmont.

Mike's Foreign. 4347 Twain #C, San Diego, CA 619-280-8883.

Mike is great. Been repairing ACVWs for over 30 years. Extremely knowledgeable and helpful. His prices are reasonable considering the quality of work that he does.

A friend of mine had him build a 40hp and had nothing but problems with it. When he took it back they couldn't get it to run right. He ended up selling the car. Caveat emperator.

For the record, I ended up taking my bus to Hans Meyers for the RGB rebuild, plus a tranny re-build with a flipped ring and pinion set. I'll let you all know how the saa plays out.

I like this shop as I also can use them for the 912 and the t-5 Volvo wagon.

I always go to VW Paradise for stuff I cannot do on my own. They're a little pricey but I'm always satisfied. Plus it's only 2 miles from my house. The Lauffers can handle anything you take to them.

Who is "him"? Mike or Harloff?

Sorry for the confusion, it is Mike that built the 40hp.
I wouldn't let Paradise VW change my oil for that matter.

Well, I have the bus back. Things never turn out exactly like planned but the end result is positive.

What started out as a RGB rebuild worked up to a RGB rebuild, plus a tranny rebuild, new motor and tranny mounts, rotate the flywheel for better starter contact, new clutch disk and pressure plate, new brakes on the rear wheels. Wheeew!!

The ring and pinion gears were up graded one step. I don’t have the exact specs on what I had and what I have now but the end result is I roll along at 62 at the same sounds that I used to have at around 58. I have to hit the gas a bit harder on the approach to big rolling hills and on steep grades I go to 3rd gear sooner.

That said, for running north and south on the coast the extra 4-5 MPH extra is a fair trade off for the slight loss of power. The bill was under $3000 for the entire process.

Off the subject, has anyone ever had their seats re-padded? My seat covers are perfect, but the padding is not long distance comfortable and does not fit the covers very well. Any San Diego suggestions?

Lindy's in La Mesa does great upholstery work. ask for Armondo and tell him Eddie referred you. he gives me a good deal to referrals.
