I am trying to swap transaxles in my beetle. All was well until I tried to get the axles off of the spring plate. I tried going from the inside with a 19mm on my impact wrench but cannot seem to break the bolts. Does anyone use a different method that might be more effective?

thanks

I just pulled my trans as well.

Soaked those bolts in PB Blaster and stabalized the nut with an open end wrench while loosening the bolt with a socket.

It was pretty straight forward.

Socket, 1/2 inch breaker bar, with 2 foot steel pipe on the breaker bar for more leverage.

Force x distance from the nut = torque

I recently removed my transmission as well. I used a breaker bar (didn't need the cheater extension though) and penetrating oil. Came out easy enough...

Get yourself some PB Blaster, and give them a good soak.

A long lever will generate an outrageous amount of torque. If a breaker bar and a cheater pipe make a long enough lever, there is no nut that can't be removed, even if that means that the nut and bolt fail.

Don't use a socket wrench with a cheater pipe, though. The ratchet mechanism can fail before the nut does.
